People who don't know how to dance do not neccessarily look awkward or out of place on a dance floor - it's the people who are overly self-conscious that stick out.
The main point is to look like you're having fun, and the best way to do this (if not the only way) is to relax, accept the fact that NOBODY is looking at you, and just have fun.
Begin by loosening up a bit, then just get into the music and nod your head, or tap your toes or something ... the rest will eventually follow.
Don't try to watch people who dance very well too much. Don't start examining everyone's moves unless you can pick up dance moves with relative ease, since you'll just be making yourself even more self-conscious and anxious.
Remember, just have fun and that's what people will notice rather than your dancing ability.

Look around at how most of the other people at the party are dancing, and imitate them.
If that doesn't work for you, dance lessons should help you to feel more confident.
Seriously, though, people really aren't looking at you all the time. I doubt if they even notice your dance moves.

why dint you try taking a dance class. pick a type of music you would like to dance to and see if there is anywhere around you that offers any classes. sometimes gyms, or colleges give dance classes in the evenings or weekends. you'll meet new people who have the same interests and it'll help you loosen up a bit. good luck!

Dance can't be learned on the web. You have to take dance lessons for real. Try it, it might change your life. If you're not too keen on dance instruction houses, maybe look for a dance instructor who can teach you at home where you'll be more comfy.

lol@ the "you must be white comment"...I think everyone can dance and learn how to...I started dancing since I was very young, because my mother made me... I found that dancing, you have to find rythym...some people have a hard time with it but it's the most important part...when I was young, I used to be very shy when dance infront of other people...now, I learned more about myself and my body, I just dance. doesn't matter if there r people there or not...its relaxes me...don't worry about how you look when you dance...just dance, let loose and let your body go...let it feel the rythym and just dance away...try dancing in your room or when nobody around...even if you don't know any dance moves, just start moving your body...move your feet to the beat, or nod your head to the beat of the music, or shake your hips side to side to the beat of the music...feel the music, let your body go...don't worry about anything or anybody looking...you're trying to and feel comfortable and relax...don't be afraid to move...for me, its my hips I use alot...so, at first I was very shy to shake my hips infront of people but then, like I said, I started to loosen up, let my body go...now, I just shake it as hard as I can and feel very comfortable knowing that I'm happy and totally satisfy with my performance, and also the audience are enjoying the show as much as I do...Maybe you're not dancing for shows but it applies to you too if you want to know how to dance...dance is art, be creative and be yourself...good luck

Alexander is exactly right; I'd just like to add that if you find a woman and tell her that you want to learn to dance, you may never be able to get rid of her! We LOVE men who aren't afraid to take a chance and dance.

its not a race thing knowing how to dance..there is no need going on the web to know how to dance...good dancers are good listeners, listen to the music and move to the tunes..watch people dance and move in the same vibe

Either take a dance class or ask a female friend to work with you.
It's okay, you know, NOT to dance at all, too.
