The Exodus verse does seem to frame the prime driving theme of the bible much better.

I'll go with the Exodus verse. The plot of John 3:16 had been done before, even without all the big box office success, and stories about ancient Egypt are cool no matter what.

It's very easy to quote things out of context. God killed the firstborn after Pharaoh didn't release the Israelites from slavery after enduring nine other plagues. This was the final punishment on Egypt for their brutality against them.
