My husband and I started going back to church a few months ago. It has totally changed my life. I have quit drinking and quit cursing. However, my husband hasn't. Before we even pull out of the parking lot of the church, he's already cursing like a sailor (no offense to any Navy persons). I have asked him not to curse anymore, but he still does. I have told him that I don't want to hear anymore cursing, since I'm not cursing, but he doesn't seem to care. He says that I knew that was the way he was when we got married 5 years ago. I understand his point...I used to curse too, but I've quit and I don't want to hear him do it anymore. What can I do?

Just be patient, remind him of your wishes as sweetly as possible (without nagging). Let your face do most of the talking and look hurt when he does cuss. For a while he'll keep cussing, but eventually you'll start hearing the word "sorry" afterwards. If you hear that magic word, then you'll know he is making an effort to at least not cuss around you. Be sure to show your gratitude for that, and know that while he may not completely stop it will probably taper off significantly. In the mean time be aware of what media you bring into the home. It's a lot harder to stop cussing, when you hear it all the time. Best wishes.

It's a habit and will take a while to break. But only if HE wants to break it. There is nothing you can do except reward him and give him positive encouragment "use your imagination". What ever you do, DON'T NAG!! That will just cause him to curse more. Be patient and pray lots. Love him and make him feel that you accept him even though he hasn't made as much change as you have.

You can't force someone to quit these types of things. The harder you try to force him, the more he's going to do it. But if he's willing to, the curse jar is a good idea.

First, tell him swearing all the time makes him sound ignorant(a truism). Second, tell him you will set a "fine" (whatever amount you choose) for each time he swears.
Record him swearing when he doesn't know, then play it back and ask if you can share it with friends(church). After all It's "the way he is"...good luck

If he wants to change you can do a curse jar where he puts money into it every time he curses. But you can't change someone who doesn't want to change.

I've heard the money thing alot, then if you accumulate enough you can buy yourself something nice! Or put a rubber band around his wrist and pop him when he swears.
