My hair is really thick, cut shoulder-length. I want a sprial perm, and I have gorgeous hair now. (not to be stuck-up) I just hate my thick hair, and I can't ever get it to do what I want, and I can't get it to hold a curl from a curling iron. Will it make my hair gross? And how does it look while it grows out, since my hair grows really fast? Can I straighten it with a straightener? I want ringlets. Should I get it done at like a JCPenny's, or can I get it done at Famous Hair? (A cheap salon) Help!

Go to a trusted salon where they train their employees beyond the basic schooling they've been through.

Lots of people will tell you not to get a perm. I say do whatever you want as long as you follow it up with good maintenance. My hair was straight when I was younger and now is very curly. I have died it, permed it, bleached it, streaked it and chemically straightened it. As long as you keep it conditioned and the ends trimmed up, your hair will be fine.

Be really careful putting chemicals on your hair though, especially if you already like your hair for the most part. Make sure you go to a trusted salon to get the perm done and then be religious about deep conditioning at least every six weeks.

I wouldn't recommend straightening it too soon after the perm. Make sure to give your hair some time (a month or so) to recover from the perm before doing too much else to it. Straightening and bleaching your hair are two of the hardest things for your hair to take. They do the most damage by drying your hair out and consequently it breaks off.

Finally - after you get the perm done, good hair products are the key. Make sure that you use products that are oil based rather than water based. Water based products tend to dry your hair out more than water based products.

You can't really undo a perm. You will damage it severely if you try. If the perm is done professionally from a reputable salon it should be OK, but you'll always have to watch out for dryness. Also, when your hair grows out it will be half curly and half straight which looks like crap.

Have you considered getting your hair thinned out? A salon could do that too.

Instead of a perm, have you considered thinning your hair out some?? Since you said it was shoulder length, I have a feeling that it will just be a huge poofy afro with a perm. And it takes like a year to grow out. I would thin your hair out some, then think about getting a perm.

You'll get what you pay for! Ask a number of women who've had their hair done, and you'll find, that if done properly, it won't damage your hair, but if you go the cheap route, you'll be taking a big chance.
