Its extremely difficult to boycott a product that we all need to an extent . How do you get to your job in a city that has no public transportation ? How do you ride a bike if you are working and are disabled ?
How can you ride a bike or walk 10 miles with 8 ins.of snow on the ground and its 2 below?
How does a mother take her sick children to a doctor ?
Yes a boycott of gas usage sounds great but what and how do all people survive in the above conditions. Boycotting one particular company may have a small effect but not much I'm afraid. Finding better ways to obtain the fuels we need and implementation of stronger regulation of the monies designated for research and development of alternate fuel supplies that's what we need.
Although it would feel better in my heart and mind to hold a sign declaring my intent to boycott Exxon ....

It would be a great idea to do a mass boycott however, there is no way to alert the masses. If it is done via e-mail, it will take too long and people would be getting it late. We would not have the support of the media, so telivision, radio, and news sources would not be available.(remember we are talking about everyone not just some. It would have to shut down the country and all businesses for a day. People would need to be willing to stay home, and do nothing. Most people would take the day off especially a Monday or Friday, but would use it running errands thus using gas.

Would like to. I drive 40 miles each way and my wife drives 60 miles each way. Paying for gas is eating us alive. The only problem is, if we don't go to work we don't get paid. Kind of a rock and a hard place. Just where Exxon likes to keep us. Just heard Exxon reported all time record profits last quarter. How can that justify record gas prices?

What if everyone in a town decided to boycott the water company to lower prices, what do you think the water company would do? They would be sitting there laughing and just wait till people started calling to get their water turned back on. You can't live without water, and you can't live in America without oil. Don't flatter yourself by thinking you have solved the country's energy crisis by talking of some stupid boycott.
Also, it probably hasn't occured to you that gas stations are owned by hard working men and women, with families. I have several friends who own gas stations as family businesses. What do you think would happen to people like this if you somehow organized a large gas boycott? Station owners make only pennies on each gallon sold in the first place, most of their income is from people buying concessions when they come inside to pay for gas. There are countless gas boycott questions on here and most are asked and answered by people with a one semester of community college understanding of economics.

I think a boycott has the possibility of increasing it more for the people that need it and can't boycott it because they HAVE to travel.
I think instead we should change our lifestyles more permanently, rather than a short term boycott
Bike or walk more places, buy better gas mileage vehicles or alternative fuels (if possible), shop locally. Show that we support alternative fuel research.

The question becomes, how are you going to get people to stay home? If they stop working to do a gas boycott.. guess what? They don't have money to eat. So unless you pay for my moving expenses to get me closer to my job, this won't work.

How am I supposed to "stay home" from work. I'd get fired have no money and end up homeless. As long as oil men are in washington dc the oil companies will profit. that's step 1 of the solution

Well. we have no choice....we can not just NOT buy gas...people have to go to work to pay their bills...people have to go to school, doctors visits, etc. They KNOW this and the prices keep going up. Kinda like prescription drugs and doctors care, its something everyone needs so they can pretty much charge what they want..(unfortunately there is no insurance we can purchase to help with fuel prices). We are at their mercy. Someone needs to come up with something though.
