Written in response to a series of letters to the editor in the Orange
County Register:

Dear Editor:

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statute of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.

Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer.

Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times.

They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and
some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.

They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free
lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation
Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from.

They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan.

They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here.

These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about.

I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early
1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and
sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has
become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think
they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those
waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the Statute of Liberty, it
happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration
bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just
yet.

Actually not much has changed on the immigration front. The above is full of inconsistancies and bullcrap immigrants were not welcomed with open arms, they were not harder working or had better ethics, they missed the homelands and kept their ethinicty, sons and grandsons mettled into the pot more readily tha off the boat immigrants. Illiteracy was rampant and resistance to change was strong. Immigrants have allways been hated and despised, taken advantage of by their own kind pimped by mothers, brothers, fathers and nieghbors. European immigrants of the past were no exception. The notion that past immigrants were somehow better than todays is a JOKE. Poeple immigrate to improve their situation, and have no effect on how your situation is. If we took all the immigrants in our counnrty and sent them back, closed our borders. Nobodys life would improve, your children would not be any safer from child molesters and deviants, you wife would not be at any less risk of assault, your finances wouldn't be more secure, our country wouldn't be wealthier. Rapist, child molesters, swindlers ... ... would still roam the land freely. The things that matter most wouldn't change. The chance of harm be done to the what matters most in our lives, family, wives, children, and finacial security are much more likely to be done by a white male than all other groups combined. Our society can not exist with out a myriad of socio-economic diversity. If we woke up tommorrow a country of wealthy white people. It wouldn't work, who would do the dirty work and unskilled jobs. Are you going to pay me $200,000 + a year to clean your gutters, bag your groceries, ... ? Would we be a stronger country if we only had 10 million people or 10 thousand. Would anyone even join the military? The biggest problem in our country is that 48% of the wealth is owned by 1% percent of the population, and they feel they are the only ones to run the country and set policies. And they distract from the real issues and problems that plague our lives and society. You should read the "bill of rights" and apply it to all. If racism and hatred didn't, exist our country would be much better off. Our ethinic make up isn't the same as it was in 1776, 1876 or 1976 and will change by 2076. The French hated the English, the Dutch hated the Germans and Everybody despised the Irish. We should learn to accept everybody for who they are and punish people for the deeds they do.

PS I am an upper middle class white male.

I agree totally about the English. There are many hispanic immigrants that refuse to learn the language. They need to go home. But at the same time, my husband from India speaks better English and is more educated than most Americans. I think there is a middle ground, keeping part of your heritage and blending into your new country.

Those people came here because this country was seeking immigrants to build this nation......When they came here and settled in, many were treated horribly and were taken advantage of....Ever heard of the huddle masses?

Many current labor laws stemmed from the treatment of those immigrants. Many families lived in cramped living quarters and we treated like slaves. Even their children were required to work in horrible conditions, from that came our child labor laws.....

It wasn't all that unlike what illegal immigrants have to face today, the only difference is, that this country was seeking immigrants for hard labor back then. Today, since our country was built on the backs of those immigrants, we don't need the slave labor anymore?

Sorry, but we do take advantage of those illegals and trash them at the same time....Sounds a little hypocritical to me...

And poeple were turned away for a variety of medical ailments.

Although times have changed, the concept is still valid.

I have no problems with people who want to come to this country. Just be legal about it.
