They can be real if the person having one perform on them believes in it enough, but that would involve an actual possession taking place in the first place and that can't happen. Spirits and such cannot possess people. The people who have claimed to have it happen, it was all in their heads.

If you believe the Bible (I do), they are real. I have seen them on old tapes of Benny Hinn crusades and they are freaky.
