What you really have to worry about is those people who say that the French are horrible! Do you really think it's realistic to categorize an entire nation as horrible? It makes no sense! They obviously have a wild hair in their butt about the French; who knows why... Every country in the world has good people and bad people. You have to wonder why they're so hell bent and determined to single out the French.

No in exactly the same as not all amercians are dumb rednecks, all germans hunourless, all brits arrogant, and all swiss like the Germans, but without the humour.
However The french ahve a great deal of prode in France, the country the people etc, somethign we lack
In much the same manner as the UK the further you go from the capital the more freindly people are, the less ignoratn, the less sneering the less smug.
Its a stereotype, and like most stereotypes it binds some truth and some fiction to create an overall image.
The French can be deligtfull, spontaneous, considerate and freindly, they can can also be surly, ignorant, dirty and hostile. Often the reaction you get is down to you and how you approach different people. If you nake an effort to speak French and learn about their culture then I've (nearly) always found them to be charming

Not as what you're expected. It's actually depends on the person's perspectives in life.
Basically, I feel that the French are quite polite and sociable. It's best to greet them first before serving you. Face it, it makes everyone's day better if you greet with a smile.
Secondly, remember the myth saying that French won't help you if you speak English. Well, that's all in the past now. French now learn English language at the age of six. They now have this perspective that English acts as business language. Therefore, it's important for them to learn it. So, you can speak basic English with them...but it's best to equip yourself with a little basic French phrases, just in case.
So, it's all boils down to who's making the first move -- taking the initiative --.

No. I travel to France every year for a vacation and the French are just like anyone else. Treat people with respect and you will get respect. I always try to speak a little French and that always helps. Most will put you out of your misery and switch to English. I always have a nice time there and have many friends there.

I live in France now and have done for ten years.
They are lovely but come across as arrogant and whilst an accent is sexy being in a relationship is hard, (i was married to a French girl too).
They also come across as miserable a lot, especially in Paris. Due to the fact they are taxed to the max and unemployment is high and there isnt much to do outside the cities.
French men tend to be very macho and that can be off putting to the girls.
But, its a lovely country with lovely people and those Brits that hate them dont know them.
One thing though- they are'nt as great at food as they pretend. The UK has surpassed them recently.Always a good topic of debate with the most arrogant macho bloke you find! He,He.
Go and foind out, but dont expect a great nightlife!

Umm...no. They are actually shy. Like, people say French hate foreigners, but that isn't true. They just think it is a bit unusual to be around them, and sometimes make these mistakes people call horrible.
They're kind of like Americans in another way, except more shy.

I was in France for two and a half months this sumemr. My experience was far from what I had been told. The French are very helpful. I guess you will get obnoxious people in every country. It is just that if you are polite and wear a smile you will be better off.

I just came back from Paris, and the people there were lovely, and that was after they lost the world cup! In my experience the French are lovely, they just get a bad press from the uk and us media, probably because those countries are jealous of the french.

No, not all of them. But if you are traveling there, and you know some french words but cannot really speak it, it is best to just speak English, rather than attempting to speak French and mutilating their language, which would probably upset many Frenchmen.
