he has been grounded from everything, no tv, radio, etc. We will work him hard for a couple of hour right before bedtime. we go to bed at 9, so everything in the house is off. even playing basketball for 2 hours before bedtime, he is still up till 2 or 3 and wakes up every morning at 6 am??!!!!

Start waking him up at 5 am every day. He'll learn.

Is he just sitting in the dark trying to fall asleep? If he's doing other things like TV and playing around, you're the parent, it's up to you to set the rules in the house. No 13 yo should be up at midnight, let alone 3am on school days. Trying having him go to his room between 9-10pm and suggest reading a book to relax. No TV.

A lot of kids with ADHD need to take meds to sleep at night. He can't help it that he can't fall asleep. That is very common. You might look at changing his meds. If he is on long lasting Ritalin, you might change to the short acting so it wears off by bedtime. You might also try some of the newer drugs that are non stimulants that are out. He can't sleep becuase Ritalin is a stimulant. Works great for ADHD but not so good if you are trying to go to sleep on speed!

Steve, Im neither a psychiatrist, nor a pediatrician. Only one of them can speak to this.

It may be something medical or drug-related, but it might not. It could be classic teen rebellion, or something that has been building for a while.

If any of those are the case, the most qualified person is going to a real, qualified human being. They will have to tell if its medical or not. If they want to evaluate his behavior then they have to watch how you interact, and talk with you.

That precludes a yahoo answerer from giving the most relevant answer.

Well, I would recommend you to go for a manual one-time treatment called Atlasprofilax. The effect on the self-healing power of the body and mind is simply amazing - own experience. :-)

It's really worth a try as there is a fair chance of getting rid of all the symptoms.

At present, the treatment is available in California and Europe only, costing about 200 Dollars. Good luck to both of you!

have you tried, having dinner a bit earlier, this will make his body clock , think that is later than it really is :)

Otherwise when you want him to go to bed, You could go and sit in the room with him , or try going to bed at the same time.

Otherwise speak to a doctor, as there may be side effects from the medication he is on.

Try to make him listen to light music, or a heavy work out in the play ground.
