First, you would have to measure the average length of your stride. Multiply that by 10,000 to determine how many feet you have traveled. There are 1760 yards in a mile (or 5280 feet). So, divide the number of feet you traveled by 5280 to determine how many miles you have traveled.
So, with a stride of 2 feet, you would travel approximately 3.79 miles in 10,000 steps. With a stride of 3 feet, you would travel approximately 5.68 miles. Well, if you don't count change in stride due to fatigue and terrain.

Uncleneal gave you about the best answer there is. When you think about it, every persons stride is different. Longer legs, faster pace, yada yada blah blah. So for each person, the distance would be different. take a walk through some dirt and sand. Go back and measure your stride from the heel of on foot print to the other. take that measurement, times it by 10,000. Divide by how many feet are in a mile, and that will give you the miles you would walk if you walked at that exact same pace and stride for all 10,000 steps.

Well an average step for me comes in at about 2 feet. (I paced off ten normal steps, and measured the distance (~21 ft) I had traveled). So, If I took 10,000 steps; I'd have walked 20,000 feet.
20,000 feet divided by 5,280 feet per mile is a little less than around 3.79 miles.

4.73 Miles (roughly)
The average stride is approximately 30 inches
30 inches x 10,000 steps = 300,000 steps
300,000 steps/12 inches = 25,000 feet
25,000 feet/*5280 = 4.73 miles
*1 mile = 5280 feet
Stride length is determined by your leg length; a person with shorter legs would have shorter stride resulting in less distance covered and vice versa for a person with longer legs.
If you want to know how far YOU would walk in 10,000 steps, you need to measure your stride.
