When you're in a car crash and you're not wearing your seatbelt, you become a risk to all other passengers in the car. You can be thrown and injure them- and the same goes for other heavy objects not secured or belted in, like toolboxes, sports equipment, etc. Some states require riders to wear helmets, some don't.

A helmet-less rider is much more vulnerable to bashed head than a rider not wearing a seat belt---the reason being a) a two wheeler is much more imbalanced and prone to tipping over than a four-wheeler b) to some extent air-bags which are mandatory in all cars protect the passenger, while a motorcycle rider does not have that safety feature.

In some states like NJ and CA, seat belts are mandatory, even for passengers in the back seat. For some strange reason, this important safety feature was left to the states, which means it is all over the board.

technically it is illegal to go without a helmet in all states without the proper medical coverage. and with that coverage the state is not left to cover unpaid medical expenses because a severe motorcycle accident an unhelmeted rider usually dies whereas a motor est not wearing a seat belt is just severely injured and when the med pay is used up and the car owner doesn't have the money to cover the rest of the cost it is put on the tax payers in the long run. so in my opinion(which i do have both a truck and a motorcycle) if you are to dumb to protect yourself in all ways possible then at least we as taxpayers only have to pay for a portion of peoples ignorance

Yeah, and why do the newsies always report if a rider had a helmet, but not a car driver?

More head injuries are sustained in cars. Car drivers should have to wear helmets, seatbelts and have air bags.

I really do not think that it is legal for a motorcyclist to go without a helmet. I think the choice is really in the persons that are riding these bikes. I know that I used to not like wearing a seatbelt and I know that they save lives and just like motorcyclist they know that helmets will protect them from serious head injuries and trauma to their heads that they can incur from riding these big bikes.

Bikers are mean a scary looking. Do you want to tell them they have to wear a helmet? It's much easier to tell the yuppie in the Prius that he has to wear a sealbelt.
