True melancholy (melancholia) is a depression without evident cause or reason, which lasts and lasts. We all get sad because of a death or loss in the family, change, loss of job etc.--this is the natural reaction to stress and weariness and sometimes the inability to make the changes we can see needed. But pathological depression is just "there"--no apparent cause and no evident way to help. In the old days (19th cent and previous) this was the original meaning of the word "hypochondria"--low spirits.

A black cloud surrounding you that doesn't ever go away! It presses and presses on you and keeps you down in the dumps, depressed and lonely. More and More people are getting it everyday! Take care don't let the black cloud souround you and smother your life out. The best thing to do. Is to do something all the time. Get out of bed and get busy cleaning and going places. Get out of the house and get around people. Go to the library, go to the store and walk around look at different things. Set goals for your self. Tell your self you are going to contact an old friend a older loved one. Contact them by phone, visit them or write them a letter. Keep busy. Tell your self that you are an important person and that you are going to beat this depression out of your life. Get on meds to help. See a therapist to talk. Do things that make you smile. Set down and plan each hour of the day so your not just setting idol. Keep your hope strong!(Hope gives life its flavor. As long as hope lives, so do we; but when hope dies, a piece of the soul dies with it.) Above all, try something! (When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die) Think! Learn from everyone! Its taken me 40 years to learn these things and I am now applying them to my life and it has helped kicked the black cloud down! Good Luck! Hugs!
