I don't know if this is the right category to ask this question in, but why do people long to be remembered for something? I myself have that desire to make some mark on the world before I go. So, what do you think?

It is our shot at immortality. Our bodies will die but our name can live on.

Well, do positive things. Sure, it's natural to want to leave a mark in he world. Most would hope to influence a positive change in the world somehow.

Thats a good thing.

Some people get desparate and leave a negative mark. lol Jesse James for example- (I know there's plenty of others) but where are they shoveling burning coal now?)

Do it with Zen. be a positve force, but not by being obvious about it.

Thanks for the great question!! Very thought provoking! Hey! Your already making a positive mark in the world!!!!

best to you,
Omni

I was told many years ago, "Live in a way so the world will mourn your crossing". I have and still do live my life in that manner. I have no worries about people missing me or remembering me. Those things are not important. The here and now is important and if one lives a good life that is beneficial to others as well as themselves, I think they live on in memories and actions of those they touched.

I tell my children stories about my parents. I hope they will tell those stories and tell new ones also about their dad and I. I'm not sure that I am making my mark on the world, but as a family we do some funny stuff and I hope they remember those good times!!

I have no such desires myself. It is my hope that God recognizes me when I go there for judgement. My name is in the book. What difference will it make after you are dead? It is what the world thinks of you while you are living that matters to me. Death will take care of itself.

People spend their whole lives trying to be liked. They work their butts of to do things. But when they reach the age of 70 or so they don't want to look back and say "dang it". This is a really good thinker of a question. When I started I had a good answer, now I don't. haha, sorry

You only have this life. If you want to leave your mark on it, just make sure its for a good thing.

I guess it's the idea that your life should count for something, plus the fact that we all have an ego that demands recognition, in life as well as death.

Families do family trees all the time. Just add something in your family book telling about how great you are. If your family doesn't have one (in Christian families it is usually a Bible) then start one.
