Defense of others and yourself has always been considered a moral duty. The Great Commandment to love others as your love yourself supports this.
"The act of self-defense can have a double effect: the preservation of one's own life; and the killing of the aggressor. . . . The one is intended, the other is not." (St. Thomas Aquinas)
Even war under certain circumstances can be considered justified.
The “just war” doctrine requires rigorous consideration to determine if defense by military force is legitimate.
Offensive war is never justified.
All the following considerations must be true to justify war:
1. The damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave, and certain;
2. All other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective;
3. There must be serious prospects of success;
4. The use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated.
With love in Christ.

All murder is considered a sin. So, when is killing another human being not murder? Whew, that's a tuff one! Personally, I am glad I will never have to make the decisions people in the military or police officers have to make. When is it really "OK" to take another life?
Having said that, I am very grateful to all of those who are police officers, and who take their job (to protect and to serve) seriously. I do wish we could do without the military. There has been quite enough war. But, as long as we have crazy kids convinced of heavenly sex with virgins crashing planes into buildings, or fanatics sure that it is their God-given responsibility to force everyone else to believe the way they do, I suppose we're stuck with military forces, wars...and millions of suffering children. Those horribly mangled bodies of babies you see on the internet...those are the lucky ones.

The bible says there's a time for everything under the sun and that includes a time to kill. I doubt if killing in the line of duty is a sin if your life or someone else's was in danger.

hey your a guitarist? cool! Me too!
yeah, I suppose there are times when it is unavoidable to kill someone. But for the most part, and in all religions, life is sacred. So, if one doesn't value life much, in the flip-side of the spiritual, these low valuers, are really devaluating themselves. This could be where "hell" is created- I think so.
As a musician, we kinda really need "live" people to hear the music. wouldn't that suck if your entire future audience/listeners were wiped out in a war?
Killing (accidents are something else) without the most dire of reasons, is, yes, a sin.

What is it people like to say? Thou shalt not kill. I don't believe there are any disclaimers attached to that commandment. So anyone endorsing, promoting or engaging in the act of murder is sinning. Although you'd be surprised by the numerous followers of christianity who supprt the death penalty and wars.

It is a sin because police officers can always shoot the person in the leg but they always go for the heart.

for the most part no killing is bad. but in certain situations such as Just Wars, killing is okay. remember david and goliath. david was helped by God in a war. some people said that all killing is bad but only in an approved situation decided by the church which have certain rules and regulations they go by in order to deem war or killing as acceptable.

In Christianity? No. See, Christians talk alot about absolutes existing and all of that, but always have a loophole, exception, or rationalization ready for any occasion where they have to get around one of those "absolutes" they hoist onto everyone else.
