The Islamic argument that John 14:16 supports the coming of Muhammed is an incorrect one. This is a perfect example of what happens when a person quotes one verse and ignores the information contained in the surrounding verses.
The surrounding verses read:
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you."
Notice that verse 17 explains that the promised "Helper" is invisible and unknowable to the world; however, He is known by and dwells within believers. This CANNOT describe Muhammad, since he was visible and known to unbelievers; he also did not dwell within believers. These verses clearly describe the Holy Spirit, the third person of the One God with a Triune Nature.
Verse 18 is a reference to the fact that Jesus returned to His disciples after being crucified AND that He returned to believers through the Holy Spirit. Even today, believers experience Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit, during prayer and when we receive prophecy (Rev. 19:10b reads "For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.")

Jesus knew he was leaving them, hence the request to his Father for 'another' helper;the 'spirit of the truth'.
This "spirit of the truth",or "holy spirit" is not a person, but a force - Jehovah's own active force. It is powerful beyond measure. It is the force Jehovah used in creating the universe,in performing spectacular miracles, and in providing visionary revelations of his will.
God's active force acts as a helper,or comforter to his people. For instance, the apostles had received intensive teaching by Jesus. But would they remember what he had said?Would important instructions be lost because of their imperfect memories?Jesus assured them that the holy spirit would 'bring back to their minds all the things he had told them'Thus, some eight years later,Matthew was able to write the first Gospel.More than 50 years later,John was able to write a reliable account filled with extensive details about the last few days of Jesus' earthly life.
More than simply bringing words back to their minds, the holy spirit taught the disciples and guided them to a fuller understanding of God's purpose. While Jesus was yet with his disciples,he told them things that they did not then, clearly understand.Later, however, moved by holy spirit,John,Peter,James,Jude and Paul wrote explanations of further developments in God's purpose. Thus, the holy spirit served as a teacher, giving valuable assurance of divine direction.

Jesus' comment came after He announced He would ascend to Heaven. The Father then sent the Holy Spirit, part of the Triune Godhead, to be in our hearts and souls and be a comfort to us.
Jesus also has many names as does God. Jehovah Jireh. Son of God. Yah. Son of Man. Yahweh Rapha. etc

He was referring to the Spirit. Every member of the trinity is referred to by several names throughout the bible. It was common to name God using his characteristics. Jesus didn't mean he was sending another person.

Because while Jesus was on earth, he acted as the comforter. Since he was leaving, he let his followers know that he wasn't leaving completely--he was leaving his spirit to guide them and comfort them.
