I have a friend who is crazy about her two dogs like her own children spending money on their cataracts and such, fussing so much and cannot think about living without them although they are in their old age. Do you think she is normal? Does she has no other person to be attached to or is she making herself important by taking care of her dogs?

I love my dogs very much. But the people in my life always come first.

Could be she is like a lot of people in developing attachments to pet. A dog or cat can be the best friend a person ever had. Many people consider their pets to members of the family. This isn't necessarily wrong or psychotic in any way. But it starts crossing the line, of course, when those pets are favored over family and human friends. In the end, however close you are to a pet, that dog or cat must ultimately be treated for what they are. For example, you can only treat a dog like a human so far and then you begin to lose control over it or you allow that dog to rule youl. Dogs can be great company and good friends/companions, BUT they are still dogs and human psychology, for the most part, simply does not work!

Ideally pet owners don't have to make choices between people and pets. Everyone in my house gets proper medical care, dogs, cats and people.

When you get a pet, you make a commitment to a creature who will have, for their entire lifespan, the mentality of a small child or infant (depending on the animal). They will never grow up and be self-sufficient, they will always depend on you to care for them. If you can't handle that responsibility, don't have pets. They are living, breating, feeling creatures, just like you are.

Humans are just smarter animals. What right do we have to say which other animals are and are not important?

Well I think people are more important then animals, although there are some people I would place under my dogs needs any day. But I also think animals hold a lot of importance. Animals are usually there for you in your worst of times, and maybe it's their inability to see the world as we do, as they just enjoy life and all it's benefits. They comfort us in unexplainable ways and for that we should be there for them when they are down and out.

i love my dog like a child. i honestly believe that animals need tha same attention people do, but in a different way. ur friend isnt crazy. she just loves her dogs and there is nothing wrong with that. its very easy to get attached to such loyal animals, and its tha same with cats, but they are also much more independent. i have a husband, but we have no children, so my dog right now is my child. maybe thats how ur friend is feeling. shes not crazy aight

She sounds like a good pet owner. If all pet owners were like her there would be alot less animals suffering in the world. My boyfriend and I love our animals as we would children cause they are just as dependant on humans to care for them and as helpless as children would be if left on thier own. People should not get animals if they are not going to care for them the way they deserve to be cared for. I dont think it has to do with her being lonely I think it has to do with her having a good heart.

Every person finds purpose and meaning in their lives through the ones we love. Your friend sounds like a very lonely person who's meaning in life comes through her pets. How sad.

she sounds like a responsible pet owner....

our kids come first before our dogs...like if a child has a medical problem and one of the dogs does too...the dog will have to wait until the child is cared for....

I think you should always put people first in front of your pets. Yes it may sound cruel but if your mother is having a seizure and your dog has fleas, I think you should put your mother first. obviously this is all hypothetical. But yeah your friend is normal, but she just shouldn't think TOO highly of her dog.

If she has no children, then this is where she has put her love. And her pets love her back.

There's nothing wrong with this unless it interferes with her ability to form attachments with people, too.
