mental resilience will get us through

belief in god and the suspension of reason that is 'faith' will inevitably cause our downfall

this is a concern as the three 'there is one true god' religions from the middle east: judaism, islam and xtianity are all attacking science with great vigor atm

basically, this issue is covered thoroughly in a great book i bought yesterday called 'the end of faith' by sam harris

Religion has no power of its own in this regard. Just like ideologies etc, it needs something or someone to create it, uphold it and exercise it. And who or what can do this? Only human beings. And that gives you the answer really.

If there wasn’t any religion in the world would conflicts cease to exist? Would murder and killing, atrocities and oppression no longer occur? No, as long as there are human beings on this planet that make conscious choices of going to war, pulling the trigger, using violence, creating bloodshed and other bad things, it will continue to occur.

Greed, jealousy, anger and other emotions of this nature in human beings is what triggers actions, or force, of violent kinds that leads to destruction. Religion didn’t talk of creating bombs or weapons, it never instructed anyone to do that. Humans however, did and do.

Human beings have the ability to utilise force, and they do. The excuse can be anything, any ideology, religion or politics.

A big threat is the environmental pollution all across the globe. This is evidenced by the fact that during the 1900s planet Earth has been ravaged, torn and harmed more than in its entire existence (not counting some natural phenomena that it had the ability to adjust to and recuperate from, also, human beings weren't threatened by it as they didn't exist at the time). It only took humans 100 years of the planet's millions and millions of years of existence to ruin it to this degree. As the saying goes, it takes a long time for a tree to grow, only seconds for humans to cut it down.

I think humans are the biggest threat to everything, including themselves. If we shun responsibility and always blame other things for the wrongs that are occuring, refusing to look in the mirror and face reality, we will always be able to find an excuse, no matter what, religion, ideologies etc, etc, when the simple fact is that it's down to us.

I would say indirectly yes. But only so much as race or gender are as well. The problem isn't the religion. I think in many ways religion is a wonderful thing for some people. The problem I find is intolerance. The fact that one group says "We're better than you so you have no purpose" If people just tolerated other religions, races, genders, sexual practices, etc. the world would be a much calmer place I think. But people think they are the judge of what's right and wrong and who deserves what. So my answer to your question is religion is not the threat, intollerance is.

It is misuse of free will that is the biggest threat to the survival of humanity. Lust, greed and anger are the primary causes of conflict, real religion is based on Cleanliness, simplicity and peace. The conclusion is that real religion does not threaten the survival of humanity, but is the ultimate necessity for deliverence of all men and women from this situation.

The fact that the worlds biggest superpower allows schools to teach the bible as fact and has some of the most radical, fascist, christian loons on the planet making up a large majority of its population, is to me, concrete proof that religion is the biggest threat to the survival of humanity.

Yes, of course. Everybody is (or should be) aware of the Moslems... ruling the world is a key part of their religious doctrine. But its much worse than that... Christianity may be an even bigger threat. Christian Dominionists have largely usurped the local level political apparatus of the Republican Party, and are engaged in a sub rosa process to politically motivate moderate Christians under the false cover of religious issues such as morality and family values. The goal is nothing less than the takeover of all elective offices in the USA.

Their doctrine comes from the Bible, starting with the term 'dominion' at Genesis 1:28... “And God said unto them, [Adam and Eve] Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION… over every living thing.” They interpret DOMINION as: “... a supremacy in determining and directing the actions of others or in governing politically, socially, or personally.”

They want to remake the USA as a theocracy... and they are succeeding.

Wake up. Take a stand. Do something... for we are sowing the seeds of our own destruction, while these religious nut-jobs are awaiting God's demolition job.

Ignorance and Illiteracy is the biggest threat to humanity. Ignorance and religious Illeteracy will be the cause. There are people who love to promote hatred in the name of religion. Their own twisted interpretation to justify all the wrong act with religion.

What a funny guy u are? Rather the greatest preserver of humanity is religion. We'd surely start with fighting, then we'd get to hot argument, and finally get to the point of harmonisation.
I have just return from the mechanic workshop where in the process of waiting, i sat with a xtn who made meaninglfull contribution to my discuss on intra fatih conflict. We parted with a kind of understanding and he marvelled at why people fight over religion.
That is a complex question as most of us that take solace in religion as a scape goat for human failings, we surely lack the basic fact of history to draw a justifying concluson.
You in particular must be ahistorical. So i advice you to go learn from history or go schooling in international politics and or international relation. It is more complex than u can see.
We surely owe our survival to faith in God. Otherwise suicide will aggravate, murder will loose count per minute. Nothing like moral to restrain man, nothing like law- because we copied virtually all our human laws from the bible.
If you can think beyond your nose, you'd surely appreciate the impact and impart of religion on our survival.

Ignorance & Intolerance are our biggest threats.

Currently, religion appears to be the best vehicle for both.

Let's see, big threats to survival of humanity ----
Spreading of hate, intolerance and war -- church supported
overpopulation of the planet -- church supported
destruction of human rights -- church supported
destruction of natural resources to support overpopulation of the planet -- church supported.

Looks like the church is supporting everything that is threatening the survival of humanity, so I'd say yes, it is the biggest threat.

Frnakly, I'm stunned at the level of ignorance that would drive a person to even consider such a thing might be true. I'm not speaking of you personally -- I'm speaking of people in general who would hold that the answer to that question is yes.

The world is bad enough as it is. It's violent, it's illogical, and sometimes it's just not fair. (Lots of times, actually.)

But it would be a whole heck of a lot worse without faith in God and without the moral precepts that the world's major religions teach.

Only the most ignorant people on earth, and only the most hardcare anti-religious bigots, would think otherwise. In my humble opinion.
