Well, I don't know if she has tried the new drug for depression called Cymbalta. That's supposed to be quite helpful.

Also. there is supposed to be a new drug out by Wyeth laboratories but I can't find the website, I thought I bookmarked it, sorry. Perhaps your friend's doctor would know what the new drug is that they have produced. It is specifically made for recurring episodes of depresson. Oh wait a minute, just found it.
It's called www.yourtimeforchange.com..
Also, there is www.mayoclinic.com/depression
And www.nmha.org.

Hope something here will help. I know what it's like to suffer!

I, myself, have suffered some serious bouts of depression. I was put on an anti-depressant medication about 3 years ago. It has done wonders. There is NO WAY that I would even think about stopping them, even though I am feeling very good right now. You have to convince your friend that the only reason she is feeling better is BECAUSE she is taking the meds. Talk to her...sit down and try to explain this to her. If she insists on stopping the medication, keep a close eye on her. Ask her husband to do the same thing. If she starts to slip back into depression, YOU talk to her. You're her friend and maybe you can get something to sink into her head. My friend did that for me. She actually convinced me that I was in depression to begin with. If it wasn't for her, I don't know how I could have gotten along. I wish you all the best!

1) Some antidepressants may not work for some people.

2) Some antidepressants do not work until maybe 3 weeks.

3) Some antidepressants may have side effects.

4) People when they are depressed may be resistant to help and encouragement. They may not want to touch anyone, because that can bring on immediate mental pain. An ex-girlfriend of mine was like that.

Some people look for distraction from depression by self-harm.
Some get help from the Samaritans.

5) Some foods seem to have an antidepressant action, maybe by raising the body's level of serotonin. One such food is tryptophan. Alternatively 5 HTP from a health food shop may be of use.

6a) There must be thousands of other ways to fight depression e.g. a meaningful activity. One of mine was writing mathematics notes for later use by me in private tuition.

6b) Music

6c) Prayer

6d) Exercise

6e) Social activities.

I'm convinced it's not possible for some people to overcome depression with or without drugs.

I have been on anti-depressants more than once and stay depressed. Sometimes I stop and I feel better.

I think in many ways depression can be terminal. I know that I have been thinking alot about suicide myself this week.

Honey, so many mentally ill people stop their meds, it's not funny. It's almost like they "HAVE" to stop them. And it's the only thing that can help. I don't understand it. She has to have another diagnosis besides depression. And she is being selfish. Get this person to another doctor and into some good therapy. She needs professional guidance.

All too ofton people stop taking their meds becuse they feel better. They do not realize it is the meds that are making them feel better, they think they are just better. If she feels they are not woeking she needs to try a different type. There are many out there and we all react differently to them. One also needs to work on the issues that they feel are depressing them to reslove them. Talking to someone else can help. I have depression quite bad.

oh my god this sounds like my hubby. If your friend feels she can cope without her medication, you will have to trust her and wait. Keep and eye out incase she slides down. or talk to your friend and suggest why don't she take a tablet every other day. Then space the days out more.

your friend needs to come off medication slowly, she won't notice too much for first few days, but couple more days she will start goin bk downhill,& she'll feel light headed & she'll start gettin quick tempered.u supposed to come off these things gradually, stopping one tablet every couple of days.depression is caused by chemical balance in the brain,& medication helps to regain the chemical balance.stop too quick, she only gonna upset the balance again
