We know that the stars are not set in anything, and they are rather more than just light-givers (particularly as most cannot even been seen from earth).
Why is god so ignorant about his own creation? Did he lack the right education? Maybe he took Arts as opposed to Engineering?

God is not ignorant, because he doesn't exist - however, the aboriginees who were the original Jewish people were ignorant about reality when they created the fable.

Genesis describes a 'terrarium' earth, in which all that exist are the earth and heaven, which are separated by a solid 'firmament', and upon which the sun, moon and a few thousand stars are hung. In other words, the firmament is the SKY... and heaven is on the other side of the sky.

People started to build the tower of Babel in order to reach heaven (on the other side of the sky) and confront god. God became fearful that they would actually succeed in encroaching upon his domain, and so he confounded their speech so the could not succeed.

The most revealing thing about this story is NOT the fact that people had such a bizarre understanding of what he universe was like... it is that God, the creator, is such a dumbass that HE is not even aware of the configuration of the universe that he, himself, created. This bone-head deity, just like the creatures that he created, thinks that he lives on the other side of the sky.

I guess that the part about God creating man "In our image" might actually be true... bone-heads, all.

Primary definition of heaven - the expanse of space that seems to be over the earth like a dome : Firmament.

Primary definition of firmament - the vault or arch of the sky : Heavens

So, the firmament is that part of the expanse of space that we can see. Are you saying that the stars are not in space? When we look up at night and see the stars, are we not looking into the firmament by its very definition?

Primary definition of star: a : a natural luminous body visible in the sky especially at night b : a self-luminous gaseous spheroidal celestial body of great mass which produces energy by means of nuclear fusion reactions

Primary definition of luminous: a : emitting or reflecting usually steady, suffused, or glowing light b : of or relating to light or to luminous flux

Wikipedia says: Unlike a planet, from which most light is reflected, a star emits light because of its intense heat.

Are you saying that stars do not give off light? The sun is a star and is THE lightgiving resource for our planet. Stars do give off light.

Given that, I don't see how you are refuting the passage you mentioned.

I understand and empathize your frustration but you must understand that god spoke in parables. He spoke in code sort of speak. He did this because the lord feels that if you believe in him you will know his ways and therefore understand his code of talk. If you are just another skeptic atheist then you won't understand and will only anger the ignorant world because they can't understand what is being said. I'm not calling you an atheist, ignorant or a skeptic. But understand, if you don't understand something that the lord has said then maybe you should ask someone who does know the answer to your question rather then getting upset. Getting frustrated and insulting the bible and god won't answer your question and won't solve your problem. Life and the teachings of god is a million piece puzzle that the entire world has a helping hand in putting together. In order to understand the message in your little corner of the puzzle you must be patient, understanding and faithful. Trust in the lord and in what he says to you. Some things can't always be understood or completed by one person so ask in a way that will make people want to help you answer your question and not turn in disgust.

The Bible, as all great books, is a product of it's time. One (as I) can still believe in the word of God while recognizing that the vernacular of that time was limited in describing many phenomena that we can better describe today.

To me, it seems that if God were to put something in language that his people did not understand, then his message would not spread (perfect beings know perfectly well the consequences of their actions). Obviously there was a plan all along that we would evolve in our understanding of the world, space, etc.

In the big picture, we should focus less on the discrepancies in language and more on the actual message.

First of all, the word raquia (translated 'firmament' in the KJV) means 'space' or 'expanse.' The stars are in space.

As far as their purpose, how do you know that they are more than "just light-givers"? What purpose do you see in them?

Perhaps the ignorance isn't on God's part, but on your own...

I completely disagree when people say that God wrote the bible. he did not. God inspired MAN to write the bible. the bible is imperfect, as every other creation of man. whoever wrote Genesis couldn't comprehend that the stars were gigantic balls of burning gasses billions of lightyears away. so he wrote down what he could best understand of what he saw in his visions. also, it was based on current 'scientific' understanding. if i think the world is flat, and you tell me God made the world, i will think God made the world flat. if the bible was written today it might say God created The Big Bang.

You don't like poetry, do you. I see this as a poetic way to state an event. Nothing back then was written in black and white. It all had embellishment added.
