My one year old cat pants and shows other signs of stress when in the same room as a air conditioner. She even crys and tries to leave the room. During 12 hours of running the air conditioner, she did not eat, drink, or use her litterbox; she just planted herself in a corner. I recently moved to a new apartment, and she is currently confined to my bedroom because her and the other two cats don't get along well yet. It has been so hot that I would like to run my air conditioner, so I feel very torn. Her and my comfort are at stake, so anyone who has some suggestions or simply can confirm that their cat exhibits this problem should help me out! I would really appreciate it! Thank you!!!

Thanks for all the responses so far. I just wanted to add that I know this isn't the stress of the new place because I have had this problem with her at my boyfriends, even though she loves it there! Also, I know I've been suffering for me (an her), but I had heard that cats who do not eat for extended periods of time can get liver problems and I don't want that, especially since in January I paid for an expensive surgery for her!!

for clarification: my a/c unit is not loud, and for those of you who have suggested letting the cats meet, I'm not sure about that yet because one of the other two cats (the female, not the male) (mine is a female) is hissing through the door (which I know is normal) but she has claws and my cat doesn't and I don't want my cat to get her butt kicked!!

K here are some suggestions...
first of all thank you for being cooperative and calm with your kitten!!! You won't BELIEVE how angry people get at their pets for just reacting to stuff!
So, is you A/C loud? I mean the sound might be scaring kitty.
Also, has she recently suffered any trauma or surgery or anything cause after my Kitty had his, he would act soooo we rid but my vet said he will accommodate my himself and he did...very quickly.
Try this: For just 1/2 and houur a day, have the A/C on and make sure Kitty is in the room.... no this is NOT animal cruelty, remember to be nice! Eventuallly kitty should get used to the A/C. Reward her with treats after the half hour. Its ok if she hides in a corner at first. Its normal reactions.
If kitty has a promblem with the other cats then i would say to have the other cats in the same Air conditioned room with her just make sure they don't start to fight. This should get them to get along better.
The rest of the day, keep kitty in a comfortable room hopefully with a fan on! Make sure there is food, water and her litter box. Eventually move her food and litter to the Air conditioned room...if you don't want that room to stink, just go with the food!
Remember to be calm and cooperative! Your kitty will thank you one day!

run the air for short periods at a time just to let her get used to the sound, cats have very sensitive ears, so the rumble may hurt her ears if she's used to a quiet household. Gradually increase the amount of time the air is on for. I know it'll be hard but try not to cuddle and pet while she's 'freakin out' it sounds mean, but in reality it'll only nuture that behavior and make it ok in her mind to act like that, confirming there is something to freak out about. just try sitting on the bed calmly reading a book or watching tv. Also cats tend to calm down the older they get. Hope this helps

I think the question should be 'Why are you letting a cat run your life?' Turn on the AC for crying out loud! The cat will either get used to it, or hide under the couch.

Your only other option is to let your apartment get stifling hot & check into a Motel 6. Without the cats.

With regards to the other two cats, you have to let them meet at some point. Try introducing them to each other slowly - perhaps try swapping their bedding around so they get used to each others scent but there comes a time when you have to let them meet and just get on with it. There will be fighting at any point at which you introduce them, its just natural and a way in which they will learn to sort out their territories. With my cats I just let them get on with it - they didnt hurt each other although it looks and sounds as if they do. They got on brilliantly after a few weeks. I wouldnt advise keeping her locked up in the bedroom as this will make her more miserable.
With regards to the air con, is there any way she can go outside? My cat gets so hot in this weather and he is scared of fans, so I just let him go where he wants and usually he lies outside and rolls in the dust which cools him down. However, if the air con is silent I would think that its not this that she is upset about - its probably being trapped in a room.

If you can put her in a room where you can close off the air conditioner, make sure she has water and a fan for air circulation. the liter box might be a good idea too.

More than likely it's not necissarily the a/c. If you recently moved to a new palce, that has more to do with it than the a/c. When you put her in the room, put some familiar things from the other palce in there with her. This may help to let her know you are staying where you are.

Try a hormone wall plug-in called Feliway. I found it at the pet store. It circulates a calming cat hormone throughout the house and helps them calm down.

My cat reacts that way to the blow dryer, he tries to attack it everytime i use it it really stresses him out...
In your case i would definitely consult a vet. it is way to hot for her to be inside without any AC.. It is for her health and comfort...
Maybe the vet can give you some medication or suggest something like Benadryl that you can give her to calm her down while you have the AC running..
Good Luck!!!
