I'm painting a BIG mural in my son's bedroom. The paint needs to be non-toxic since he's under 2 yrs old, and I'm pregnant. What kind of paint is best? Acrylic? Latex?
A couple of points:
1- I'm going to be taping some sections off with blue painter's tape, but I've had some bad luck with latex paint peeling away when I take the tape off.
2- I'd like this to be reasonably inexpensive.
Thanks!

Acrylic. Make sure you first whipe down the wall. get rid of dust etc. then i would put on a water based primer. Then use your craft paint to do your mural. If you are having problems with the tape takeing up paint. I would take an exacto knife and (lightly) score along the edge of the tape. remember to use a straight edge. you might want to have some sort of top clear coat to go over the painting. it will protect it from rubbing furnature and kids who like to draw on walls.

I painted a full wall mural of our solar system on my nephew's wall a few years ago. They painted the wall with a beautiful indigo blue washable semi-gloss latex paint. I painted the planets and stars over that with acrylic craft paint. I used a little glow-in-the-dark paint for the stars, nebulas, etc. Acrylic paint is non-toxic, but the glow-in-the-dark is not. Most kids aren't going to pick off the paint and eat it. . .as long as you have that up high enough to discourage it, that shouldn't be a problem. I usually use cheap masking tape from the Dollar Store to mask off with- it usually isn't as sticky as the painters' tape. You could score the painted edge with an Exact-o knife to ensure that the paint will not peel away when you lift the tape.
Have fun, and good luck!
And congratulations on your new baby!

for large flat sections, any type of latex paint is fine. colours can be mixed like acryilic paint, so you can use alot fo margerine tubs to separate your colours. for finer, detail work that involves many colours in small amounts, most student grade acrylics work well, and the toxicity ratings are printed on the side the tubes. most student grade colours are cheaper due to the fact that they have less pigment, and are generally made up of hues, which are non-toxic. as far as the lifting of latex paint goes, i've found that if you lift the tape by peeling gently back towards the tape, it tends to help. good luck.

I paint nursery murals, I always just use craft paint... like apple barrel, anitias, etc. They range anywhere from 50 cents to around a $1... you can get them at wal-mart, hobby lobby, michaels...
