I use Sony Vegas 6 and a Nikon CoolPix L3 and I'm shooting a video..i heard that shooting in 24 fps(frames per second) makes it look real....how do i get it to 24 fps?

Your camera does not have adjustable frame rates. 24p is a camera setting originated by Panasonic. It is a fancy way of saying the camera takes one frame of video every 24th of a second. It is a full frame instead of the interlaced video of a normal video camera. This simulates the frame rate of a 35mm film camera used for movies. Essentially it gives you a slightly choppy effect that makes it feel like film. This is popular with independent film makers.

In my opinion, this is kind of a waste of time and resources. Film does not look like video and video does not look like film. Spend the money that you would spend on filters and a camera on getting other supplies and tell the best story you can. A good story will beat a silly effect any day.

If you really want to try to get a film like effect, there are articles on how to achieve that on the DV magazine web sight. I would try searching for it there. They also have tons of reviews for cameras capable of shooting in 24p.

The standard is 30 (29.97) fps. Hollywood films are often shot at 24 fps, but it won't make it look "real." If anything, it will appear jittery and jumpy, but most likely you won't notice a difference. What will be noticeable is if you film in frame mode instead of normal movie mode. I'm not sure if your camera lets you change this or not. In normal mode, each frame records every other line. In frame mode, each frame includes the complete frame, which makes the video look more cinematic and less like television.

You can set the L3 to record at either 15 or 30 fps. Check your manual for the menu setting.
Vegas6 will also support (up to) 30fps.
