it is possible using Yahoo messenger send sms... there are other several available third party softwares like chikka. but this is only for SMS sent to the philippines.

You can send text over Internet and good thing about it is that you don't have to waste your text messages to do it. All you have to know is the person's wireless provider and go to the providers website and send the message. (Remember, not your provider, but your friend's provider). I found two websites for you below--for verizon and cingular. I'm sure the other cellphone providers have that option on their website.
