I already bought her a little sewing machine, but it doesn't work very good and she gets frustrated that she can't actually make an outfit. She designs her outfits on paper, but I have very limited knowledge when it comes to sewing, so I can't really help her make the outfit she has designed. She's so "into" it and I hate to waste her enthusiasm. This may just be a passing thing, but I would hate to not encourage anything that she's so passionate about.

I would call around and see if you can have a local home ec teacher or craft teacher to come over and show her some more things in her sewing machine. You might want to even check around at yard sales and such and see if you can find a better one for her if she is trying so hard. I would also get her some good art supplies. An art tutor should be easy to find and it might help her relive some of her frustration if she can draw more when her sewing machine is acting up. Make sure that you are steering her towards easy materials to work with as well. I think that it is wonderful that she knows what she wants this early in life and go you for encouraging her in it. Even if she changes her mind and decides to do something completely different one day these are skills that will help her for the rest of her life. Not to mention all the money it will save you in the long run. Have you priced prom gowns lately. :) Much Peace

She may be too young for a sewing machine, but not too much - my daughter is nearly 8 and has a machine. But, then again, I'm an experienced sewist and do not let her sew without 100% supervision.

Perhaps she needs to try combining the paper doll option with fabric - definitely an expansion in ideas can occur there...

There are a couple of things that she CAN do at this age-

The entire fashion angels design line might be great for your daughter:

My daughter loved the woodkins dolls when she was 5 or so...

If that is not enough - why not start her out on handsewing so she can grasp what to do to get fabric pieces together...

If she still really wants to sew, consider having her look at groovy girls, and try to make clothes for them - their clothes are usually very simple - she could make a skirt from a rectangle and velcro.

Hope this helps!

well, since you don't sew & she isn't old enough to sew well yet...maybe she could design the outfit & you could help her cut the material out in the appropriate shapes & paste them over the drawing...on the paper. It would'nt be the real outfit but it would show what it looks like. Then get a large 3 ring binder and the protective plastic sheets & you can keep her work for her. And even if she changes her mind when she grows up...you will have that book from her childhood that you will both will cherish forever.
Good Luck & God Bless!

she's too young to sew. let's be realistic. she can certainly learn that a little later. have her make some stuff that doesnt' require sewing! get her some fabrics that she chooses.....cheap cotton prints and stuff like that. Have her cut it, drape it, wrap it, etc. she can make simple things like bandanas and belts and stuff. the point right now is to encourage the creativity. chances are, she will change her mind about her career 50 times by the time she's an adult. just support her, but dont' go nuts and push stuff that may just be a passing fancy. sometimes local craft stores offer little seminars

Yes go to a craft store and let her pick out some designs but also many craft stores advertise groups that meet to sew, quilt and other activities. This may be a good place for her to pick up the experience she needs that will help her in the future.

Give her art supplies so she can draw and paint. Maybe even enroll her in an art class for children at a community center to encourage her creativity.

If there are ever any organizations in your area that put on benefit fashion shows, take your daughter.

Get her magazines so she can look at actual designer clothes.

You never know...she may stick with this dream and fulfill it some day!

In most craft stores they have little sets that come with paper dolls and clothes that u design they are usually a reasonable price, try getting those. you should also put in her in art classes because to be a fashion designer you need to be able to draw.

a long time ago there was a barbie clothesdesigning computer game, that let you make what you wanted with these thin cloth on paper things that were fun

I would check craft stores, they have plain t-shits fabic paints, my mom used to buy me plain white cheap sneakers and let me go to town with fabric paints and sparkles
