As you have discovered, a vegan diet is not necessarily low in calories--witness vegan chocolate! In order to lose a pound, your energy expenditure needs to be 3500 calories more than your intake. Generally this translates into "eat less and exercise more." Diet alone is not as effective as both diet and exercise, as the exercise basically revs up your metabolism. I'm looking at the Weight Watchers book right now and they have a section for vegetarians/vegans. For more info, go here:

How are you getting your protein? Is it through tofu, nuts, etc? If it's not, you certainly need that component. My friends that are all vegan all dropped a considerable amount of weight (although I have no idea what their metabolisms are like). I would suggest getting some vegan cookbooks; there are plenty out there and follow the recipes in there for nutritional, balanced meals.

I've noticed a lot of plump vegans and wondered why, if they were so healthy, they were overweight. Problem is, they ate too many cheeses and rich sauces with their veggies. Make sure you're not taking away from your good lifestyle by substituting the flavor of meats with calorie filled, artery clogging sauces, gravys, and cheeses. (And watch it on the desserts too)

If you are only eating true vegan and are still gaining weight there is something wrong with your definition of vegan. I think you are not telling us about the processed snack foods you are eating also. Vegan does not mean just not eating meat. Please read the definition below form Wikipedia.com
