If I remember correctly, the last time you visit MEPS for processing before being shipped out is the last time you can change your mind. They don't publicize it much. Once you are on the actual base you would have to go through military channels. The Final Contract you sign at your second trip to MEPS is the one that counts, not the first one that only entered you into the Delayed Entry Program (DEP). I think you can refuse to sign the Active Duty contract and be released, but after you sign it and take the oath you are officially On Duty. But check with someone at MEPS not the recruiter, he may be tempted to mislead you. Or call someone in the regional recruitment office, they may be more honest and save you that second trip to MEPS.

Read through this article below for some help.

EDIT: read the second link, you can get out of the DEP ;-)

EDIT: Reserves and National Guard are different, but you can still get out. Read the third link.

No. You can't be placed on awol or desertion status until you have in-processed into the army. That doesn't happen until you go to reception.

There's also a piece of paper you have to sign before you can ship. Your recruiter won't tell you about that. If you don't want to be in the army, I don't want you to be, either. Just remember that basic is just ten weeks of your life, and in the guard, it actually gets better after training. It doesn't work that way in the active army.

Of course they will go to a military prison. The mandatory sentence is for 8 years of hard labor. This involves (in California) working at rock quarries and road building every single day.

Why would someone not show up to ship out for basic training? No one is drafted and this whole thing is voluntary.

This is a stupid question and obviously you are a stupid person.

You aren't a soldier just yet. You are still a DEP if you have not gone to MEPS that last time(the one where they ship you out). If you're having second thoughts, talk to your recruiter. Tell him you need some more time to think it over, if he's worth a damn(like mine was) he'll understand. Talk it over with family and friends, and if you know anyone that has servered before. Don't make a quick judgement(to go or not to go) without giving it some though.

In short, if you haven't shipped off the BCT and haven't been given the oath yet, you can tell the recruiter that you have changed your mind.

Since it is for the National Guard the commander of that Unit has the right to call the Sheriff and have you locked up if you did all your paperwork at the unit, they can do this until they can get you to where you are going or dishonorably discharge you. I don't think that you will go to jail, but you can pay a fine and any court costs. If you have not finished processing you should not be locked up, but know that failure to report will be filed in your name, that could hurt you later in looking for work, especially government work.

If they signed up and were sworn in, chances are the MP's will have them on their short list.

Nope. You have not been sworn in yet. But your recruiter will be pissed...........he won't get his "points" if you don't ship out!
