when painting, (or drawing, or sculpting - or "doing art) - do you direct your work, or do you let the painting just "happen." do you strictly follow your inspiration - make an exact copy, or do you alter it? I'd really appreciate it if you would share your creative process! thanks!

Well, it would seem that I do both. There are some things that I want to represent realistically, but there are others that I just want to make sure that the FEELING is what comes across. Sometimes I feel like painting, and don't know what to paint, and then I just let the painting happen. I am always pleasantly surprised when that happens! Whatever you do, follow your heart. . .and keep making art!

Excellent question! I have been an artist for over forty years and I have always been of the opinion that the work takes over from the artist at some point. One begins a painting with an idea in mind but the painting really takes over and dictates what it needs and which direction it takes and where it finishes. A good artist is in constant communication with his work so he can follow its guidance.

As I'm sure is appearant in my work, I simply let it flow. I tend to drink a bit and put on some good music and just let the paint go where it wants. In my experience music is a wonderful muse, I just let the beat tell me where to put my marks.... takes most of the burden away from me that way. Best wishes

that's a hard question to answer, as i rarely ever remember making most of my works. as far as getting inspiration to begin a piece, since i tend to work mostly with recycled materials, i often let the materials themselves dictate how the piece will go. so it helps to have a lot of recycled materials around. i think that however you feel most comfortable working is the best way to do it...some artists require rigid routines in order to create (like alex coleville), due to the nature of the mediums they work with. for example...an artist working in watercolour or egg tempera would have to think more carefully about their subject matter and layout than one who works in oils. my own medium allows me alot of 'play', and for inspiration, 'play' is probably the best thing you can get.

it depends...sometimes i feel what i feel and work off of my pure emotions and energy's at that moment. Other days i love to recreate a masterpiece or just change it quite a bit. There will always be rules, even in art and sometimes in school we unfortunatly have to follow these rules and abide by them....
