I have a child in my home daycare that spits his milk out almost every time I give it to him. It doesn't matter if he's at the table or not. I've tried just giving him a little. Nothing seems to matter. I can't quit giving it to him, I am looking for suggestions.

As I mentioned it is a home daycare and I can't smack the children (I did that with my own child and he only spit once). Also, he's been drinking milk for almost a year with no allergy. And I have tried telling him that he will lose his milk if he does it and I follow up on it.

I don't know if you want to do this because it's a daycare setting, but it worked for us...

Say, "The rule is no spitting at the table. You may only spit in the bathroom sink. When you finish eating you may go spit in the sink." Take away the milk if necessary but after lunch, give him a cup of water and a stool and let him go crazy in the bathroom sink. Maybe you can get mom to bring an extra toothbrush and he can brush his teeth and swish some water every day after lunch? Of course he needs to be neat...if water gets all over the floor, spitting time is over.

Sometimes you have to channel these kinds of behaviors positively.... If you can figure out an acceptable time & place for him to do it, it will take out some of the thrill of spitting at the table. Maybe you'll decide it's OK for him to spit water in a designated spot in the yard or something like that. Be creative and make it more fun than the current situation (are the kids big enough to eat watermelon w/seeds? You could have a seed spitting contest!) and the obsession should wane fairly quickly.

You can give it to him with a stern warning of If you spit out your milk I will put it away. As soon as the first spit comes take the cup. Eventually he will see that it is no fun to have it taken away every time and will stop. If he is spitting it out he is not drinking it anyway. That way you are still offering him the milk you should be.

Pop (it doesn't have to be hard) his mouth with your hand, and look him right in the eye and say "No spitting." Do this every time, no matter what - he will stop.

Maybe he is allergic to milk. I would discuss with the parents.

have you tried explaining to him that it is inappropriate remember to be gentle and reassuring but every time he does it explain why he shouldn't do it.
