Let him, support him, back him up. My son just joined the Navy. There are support groups for Navy G/Fs and Wives. The Navy will notify you of all that. Once he is in the Navy, you are part of the Navy family. They do, to some degree, take care of their own. It will all work out.

First off, great for him , this is a very brave choice in this day and age, with conflict all over the world. If he is your b/f , you (imo) should not hold or try to hold anyone back from their desire to become. Remind him of the dangers involved , and try to support him best you can..Now , to a little known fact:
Some years back , when army , especially navy boys were gone on tour , in the port towns where they lived, it would not be uncommon to see a box of tide in the window.Yes , a box of laundry soap..this was a means of communication to the womans` boyfriend , that when the tide box was in the window , it meant the tide is in , or that her husband was back home,,when there was no tide , the coast was clear for her boyfriend to come over...
I am not encouraging you to cheat, bear in mind that waiting is the hardest part...G/L

If he joins the army, you better off alone, IMHO, when he will be in the navy he wont be able to give you the attention and careness that you need.
maybe sometime in the future you might want to give it a try, when he is a veteran.

get out....he will cheat on you after a while...AND you will cheat too
if he is "just a friend" then that's different....write him letters to help him keep in touch with things at home
