Hi there,

Fear is actually a good feeling to have. It helps you evaluate the depth of what's in front of you. This is why babies or kids, who do not usually know fear, sometimes try to touch a candle flame etc. Fear helps you judge.

Overcoming fear actually depends on what you are afraid of. For example, if you are scared of water like I am, you can try to learn swimming. So, even if I am not a master swimmer now, I can at least doggie puddle to stay alive. :)

I also have fear of heights - well I am not really sure how you can overcome this fear. But I have tried a few things. I can still try heights but I just dont look down. And if I go to the Empire state building, I never look down and stay 1 or 2 feet away from the walls cos my legs tremble....and I look up and breathe.

For some fear types, its best you stay far away instead of trying to overcome the fear. So it really depends on what you are afraid of.... you can just breathe and practise how to handle things slowly.

Good luck.

Recently my 4 year old overcame her fear of those McDonald's play areas that have those wobbly bridges and "nets" for the kids to cross. They are of course perfectly safe, but she apparently has a fear of heights.

I helped her to overcome it by facing it and realizing her fear was groundless. I crawled up into the thing with her and got onto the "net" and jumped up and down to show her, told her that if it can support my weight (I'm over 200 pds) then it can support her too. Then I got off of it, and put her on there, holding her hands and letting her get the feel of it. Advised her not to look down if it bothers her, and complimented her on her bravery.

Once she got over it, I had a hard time getting her to come down, she was so into going over the bridges and nets lol. When she finally did, I told her I was proud of her for being brave and asked her if she knew what bravery was. She said no.

I told her, just like I'm telling you, that bravery isn't about not being afraid, it's about being afraid and doing it anyway.

You have to distinguish between the things that you should be afraid of and the ones that you don't need to be afraid of.

There is no point in overcoming a fear of poisonous snakes since they should be feared.

But if you have a fear of bread, then simply pick up the bread and realize it isn't necessary to be afraid of it.

You overcome fear by fear itself. When you are afraid of something then you reach a point when you will be not afraid anymore. Also overcoming fear is circumstancial, suppose you are afraid of a poisonous insect and it tries to bite someone you love, then automatically you will rush to his aid, without thinking of your fear.

The Bible says that "perfect love casteth out fear." So I guess the answer is to ask God in His perfect love for you to take the fear away.

You cannot get rid of fear, period.
What you can do is this.. do it afraid .

joycemeyer.org has a book for about $2.00 titled 'Do It Afraid'

Silly as it sounds, that's about all we can do sometimes.. take a deep breath and just push forward.

I once saw a hypotizing session on TV. A woman was afraid of mice, a man hypnotized her and told her how a nice creature a mouse is and after that she was patting the mouse as we pat a cat!
