A dance teacher told me many eons ago, to sit on the floor with your legs open and put your chest on the floor. I used to rest my chest on thick telephone books until it didn't hurt and then I remove one and be closer to the floor, etc. After 30 days, and I counted them, I was able to get my chest completely on the floor and do a full perfect split, left, right and chinese. That was long ago, I still do it, from time to time.
Now and days, you can order a Versaflex or tristretch machine, check any martial arts store or website.
By the way, you do know it will hurt like h---, but it will be worth the time and effort.

The Authority on stretching is a tape/DVD called scientifically stretching. It had me doing front splits within a month and side splits within 5 to 6 weeks without torn muscles. You can probably get it cheap on ebay or blackbelt.com. there are other videos that will work along the same basis. I could not find it on line but it is in the back of Black Belt Magazine. Committed stretching. Don't be afraid of tearing or pulling a muscle or you will be defeated before even starting. It will come eventually and you will feel invincible when i does
