My dog does this, and I agree that the only way to stop it is to prevent access to the litter box and the cat food. Food is easy -- feed the cat in a place where the dog can't get at the food. I feed my cats twice daily and shut the dogs out of the room while they eat. The cats have learned to show up at feeding time and eat their fill. If this doesn't work (like maybe your cat is a nibbler) then try putting the food up on a shelf where the cat can reach it but the dog can't. We have one cat, Buffy, who was a stray we took in and who doesn't like the dogs. He insists on eating up high on a bookcase where he feels safe. The top of a washer or dryer might also work. You might have to lift the cat up there a few times to show him or her where the food is, but s/he will soon get the idea.
For the litter box, put it where the dog can't get at it but the cat can. If you own your home and can install a cat door on a closet door or a bathroom door, that works great. Otherwise, you can try any of the suggestions others have here. My cats go outside thorugh a cat door (we live on a dirt road away from traffic) but I have a catbox indoors just in case. The box is upstairs -- neither of my dogs like to go up the stairs so that solves that problem.

Good luck. My friend has jokingly said she wants to start a business selling cat poop shaped dog-treats. They might not be popular with owners, but dogs would love them. I can't keep my Spaniel out of the litter box. If you're dog is medium-large it's possible you could buy a covered litter box, or even have a litter-box cover built of wood that would be large enough for the cat, but too small for the dog to get to the box. There's really no easy solution.

Almost any dog will be tempted to sift through the litter box for some cat crunchies. You need to keep your dog from having access to your cat's litter box.
Some of my clients use a large size Rubber Maid storage box with a lid. You need to cut a hole only large enough for the cat to enter in one end of the storage container and place the litter box inside the container and put the lid on the top. That way, the cat will be able to enter, but the dog will not.
Cat food is not a healthy diet for a dog. Try putting the cat food in an area that they dog has no access.....maybe a counter area that is out of the reach of the dog.

Get one of those automatic cat litter boxes. It senses when the cat is in it and a few minutes later scoops it an places in a container at the end (in a covered area that you empty later).
Should end your problem. As far as the food goes. Feed your cat when the dog is out for a walk or in a locked room. You should leave the cat food out for only about a hour or so. Pretty soon, the cat will learn to eat it all or lose it.

Try keeping the dog away from the litter box. Keep the cat's box and food bowls in a room where the dog cannot get in. If you live in a small apartment, I know that's going to be difficult.
I am including a link with some suggestions.
Good luck with this, I hope things are OK.

My dog does this. Only way to stop it is to put litter box in a place where dog cant get to it. I put a chain lock (like they have on motel room doors) on a closet door so the door can only open a small amount. Cat can fit in but dog cant.

This is very simple. You put a baby gate up and keep the cat stuff in one room. Get a covered litterbox of added security.
Be smarter than the dog!!!!!!!

there is an additive you can add to to your cats food called Deter. It's usually given to the animal that is eating it's own poop, but I don't see why it wouldn't work anyways. It makes the poop have and extremly bad taste and will hopefully keep your dog from eating it.

We basically need to be smarter than dogs they rely on thier basic needs food shelter and water. There also is something you can get from petstores that you put on thier food(cats) that prevents the dog from wanting to eat the poo.
Remember dogs like smelly yucky stuff to them its like candy.
