Software is short for computer software. It means the applications and operating systems used with computers. The term software was first used in the late 1960s to show the difference from computer hardware, which are the fixed parts of a machine. Before compact discs (CDs) or Internet downloads, applications and operating systems came on soft media like magnetic discs and magnetic tape. Software is an essential part of today's society. Basically software tells the hardware when to do a specific task.

Computer software (or simply software) is the programs that enable a computer to perform a specific task, as opposed to the physical components of the system (hardware). This includes application software such as a word processor, which enables a user to perform a task, and system software such as an operating system, which enables other software to run properly, by interfacing with hardware and with other software.

The two basic components of a computer "system" are the machine itself and the set of instructions (or programs) that run on them. Early computer scientists quickly realized that they were dealing with "hardware" (the machine) and therefore the programs, which are not fixed or static, was best termed "software" to distinguish them.

Yep... some good answer already...
First... Hardware is what we called the "things we can touch"
Soft is the opposite of HARD... thus SOFTWARE.
Then there is the third category... and that's SOFTWARE that is on a CHIP... or on a floppy to be loaded on to a chip...
That's not HARD, and Not SOFT... thus: Firmware.
