When ever I post a question I am attacked and insulted because I have faith. I think all these atheists are closet believers who are afraid to think they could be wrong and maybe there is a god who loves them. They attack because they are afraid to trust. I sense alot of pain in their history. It is scarey to think life might make sense and that there may be order in the universe. Okay bring on your sad insults.

lol I didn't preach one thing- I just said I have faith. I do enjoy my life- very much. I am blessed beyond messure. I have been through many trials and come through all of them. It bothers people to have faith? I don't get it. Without faith what do you have?

So if you bring up a question then you should expect to get attacked? If I don't agree with you then I would just say " I don't agree with you" I think blahh blahh blahh. I don't condem anyone. I believe in what Jesus said about not judging. That is what I have read from other christians on this website but the atheists insist we are judging them and condeming them. I have friends who believe all kinds of things. I still like them. I want to start a new thing called "respect me as a human" .

I don't insult and I don't generalize and judge others. Most intelligent people like to discuss and debate things and learn. I am interested in religion because it is a part of my culture whether or not I believe. I learned all about Greek Gods in school, I still am interested in reading about them, but I don't believe in them. Knowledge is always a good thing, it leads to understanding and tolerance. I am not afraid to trust, I am married to a Christian whom I would trust with my life. I have no more pain in my history then anyone else. I don't find life or death scary, just a part of the cycle. Don't judge all because of a few, I don't. I just don't believe, belief is not something you decide one day, you either do or you don't.

Atheism is just another type of faith or belief. You might say that they have faith in and believe in a God that does not exist, kind of an anti-god or a negative God - a God who is a nothing instead of a something.

Truly reasonable and rational people with a good working intelligence usually adopt the attitude that there is no way to prove one way or the other whether there is or is not an invisible superbeing in the universe. So a reasonable person would not be an atheist and would not be motivated to post very much in the religion and spirituality category.

Almost all the people who post in the religion and spirituality category are irrational in one way or another. Irrational in the sense that they strongly believe things that have no proof or evidence. That goes for BOTH religious people and atheists. They are birds of the same feather so they flock together.

I'm an atheist. I posted these earlier:
Why can't all believers and non believers discuss without predudice to the views of the other person?
I'm an atheist. If I want to learn about the evolution of the Platypus ( something I know nothing about ) I check what those who study that subject have to say, and tentatively accept it as true without demanding any other proof.

Religious people do the same. They consult books on the subject of God, or ask priests. We are no different in HOW we came to believe as we do , just in WHAT we believe.

We cannot morally force others to our viewpoint. I'll come in here and ask questions about things I want to more about from those who have studied. Let's stop using Yahoo as a soapbox to undermine one another.

Do any other Atheists feel that we are being let down by some ( so called ) atheists who come here just to deride the beliefs of believers rather than learn what and why they believe?

OK, we don't believe in ANY gods. However, we can be just as moral and altruistic as those who believe. Just as some who believe can behave immorally and selfishly.

What most of us feel is that we all have a right to believe what we feel is right and not try to force our beliefs on others.

As a great man once said. " I disagree with your views, but I'll defend with my life your right to express them".

To be an atheist in America takes more courage than you could ever imagine. To not believe a person has had to think about God more than Christians have thought of Him. The atheist just came to the conclusion that he/she is not convinced. THEN the Christians condescending attitude (like the one in your 'question') anger them IN THE BEGINNING. After living as an atheist for a few years, The Christian attitude of superiority just becomes BORING. HAVE I INSULTED YOU? If so maybe you are too sensitive.

I maybe an atheist but I don't disrespect other religion. You beleive, that's your faith. i won't do anything to change it. Now, to answer your question: I think it's because people are sick of sacrificing for something that they can't even feel. The lack of safety, I think is the main reason. No proof. Simple as that.

1. This question is posted many times every day.

2. I realize that no one reads this when I just link to it, so here is my response to a previous version of this question:

I believe that I have been nothing but courteous to the people of faith here. I openly deny their belief-system. They openly deny mine. That's fine. We have, however, engaged in some very respectful debate, much to the benefit (I hope) of both sides. I know that my beliefs have not changed, but my preconceptions about young-Earth Christians have been shattered by some of the people I have found here. I think that they are wrong, but I am thrilled to have the opportunity to debate with them without resorting to name-calling or rudeness.

Granted, this requires an openness on both our parts. I think that their faith is "wrong." They think that my lack of faith is "wrong." This is where most people get hung up and debate can go no further. If someone disagreeing with you is "offensive," you're stuck. Once you accept this disagreement, you are quite free to exchange ideas. This is what I have found here (for the most part.)

As for why I spend so much time in the religion and spirituality forum, I see faith as playing a huge role in the lives of everyone in the world, be they moderate Muslims, fundamentalist Christians, Pagans, or Atheists like myself.

In my supposedly free country I see gays discriminated against due to faith. People who would never think of using the N-word openly hate and criticize homosexuals for what they are, not who they are.

I see medical advances that could help millions of people stymied by arguments that have their basis in faith. Stem cell research could potentially ease the suffering of billions around the globe, but people of faith stand in the way.

We are currently involved in what may or may not be a holy war. This is an issue of faith.

Our current government supports "faith-based initiatives" in what may be a breach of The Constitution itself.

I know that faith helps people sleep at night. This doesn't undo the tremendous amount of suffering it has inflicted at every turn of history.

I see faith as a problem, and would like to encourage people to put aside their myths and embrace reason. However, I realize that this is futile. As Jonathan Swift said, "It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of a thing he was never reasoned into."

That said, I think that Yahoo Answers provides a wonderful opportunity to try to see where other people are coming from. I disagree with the Christians (and Muslims and Pagans...), but I think it is very important for me to try to understand them. I would hope that they will try to understand me. Once we find some common ground and some mutual respect, we can truly start to talk about things.

I hate the name-calling. The largest problem I have with religion is that it is divisive. I feel that this is the most important aspect of faith that needs to be removed from the equation. Name-calling is also divisive and does not fit into my attempts to act reasonably.

I feel that I deny, but do not scoff. I embrace and enjoy open debate. I think that the things discussed here are important. I'd like to think that some of the things I have to say are pertinent.

If you want a place for only Christians (for example) to exchange ideas, there are plenty of places on the web for that. However, I think that this exclusion of other mindsets and worldviews does a disservice to those who would seek such a closed system.

That's why, as an atheist, I show up on the religion thread.

Where else do they have to go? What else do they have to do, but pick on Christians? Atheism is not a set of beliefs. They make categoric statements "There is no God" and refuse to back it up. Basically they are afraid of a God who demands accountability.
