A few pop into mind - they symbolise freedom (their erratic and spirited flight), they symbolise love (possibly due to the 70s British sitcom "Butterflies'" theme tune), and they symbolise Chaos Theory (if a butterfly flaps it's wings over the atlantic it causes a monsoon in China, etc, etc)

H said it so well .. they are usually symbolic of transformation
just like the caterpillar changes to a beautiful butterfly then symbolically it would suggest growing and developing in a great way .. perhaps into adult hood or change of career etc
but always a good symbol :o)

My sisters ex boyfriends my died, And when it happened he saw a White butterfly and then he saw it again when at the vuneral, He is not the sort of bloke that would take anything like that on board but he now has a portrait of a white butterfly in his lounge, It reminds him of his mum, I think they are just a pretty creature that we like to think signify some thing 'he even says that'. Nice thought even if they don't !

I got married in the winter (December) and a Red Admiral Butterfly sat on my shoulder whilst i welcomed the evening guests, then it flew onto the wall and stayed throughout the night. When i came back off my honeymoon there was another Red Admiral Butterfly sitting on my dress that i had draped over the chair, it wasnt there when we left and all the doors and windows were closed. I think they symbolise happiness and new beginnings.

Butterfly's signify promiscuous sexual activity. Flitting from one encounter to another.
Butterflies signify Spring and the rebirth of life. Freedom and beauty.

Some people use them to represent metamorphosis - the utter transformation of something fairly dull and ordinary into something very beautiful. They are often used by trainers, life coaches and counsellors to illustrate their services as they feel they can transform you from the dull, restricted (remember a Caterpillar can't fly!) state you are in now, to the beautiful, eye catching and free person you were meant to be.

hello:}
symbolically butterflies represent rebirth ,they come from cocoons which appear to be sort of nasty looking but then when they metarmorph they become these gorgeous flying creatures .
"rebirth".
so this is why often times we will see them in times of great change from a personal level or when someone passes it is symbolic of the rebirth of the soul something beautiful and fragile .
