Question why it is that you broke up in the first place.
Then you need to think about the healing process after the last time you broke up... if it was too difficult, don't go back there.
Work on getting back the friendship first, and love eachother as friends. After time, the trust will come back, and any other things that needed ironing over... and then you will be left with your answer. If you don't have any physical or strong emotional feelings after a set time, then you know what is right.
Don't allow him the joys of being both a friend and a bed buddy though... that can make things messy. What is the actual difference between that and being lovers? You can both detach your emotions, and play with others at the same time. Not good, if you actually do plan on getting back together at some time.

Search your own feelings and then be honest with him. If you just want to be friends then tell him that.
Part of the issue sounds like the reason you broke up and why you are afraid. If he did something to upset you, you may want to just stay away, or keep it VERY casual.

just ignore him when he mentions the relation past friendship.. change the subject when something like this happens..
