I just bought a JVC Everio cam. It's good because you don't have to buy discs - it has a 20 gb hard drive built in. It's compact, too. I bought the least expensive model (as a toy, really) and it was about $500.
The complaints people have include picture quality and issues with uploading easily.
I have not used it enough yet to give a clear recommendation, but sometimes knowing what NOT to buy is as important as knowing what's good.
So read up on this one if you are interested - Amazon consumer reviews are helpful.
Best of luck!

Sony and Canon are the two best brands. As far as media, go with MiniDV. They are slightly smaller than the DVD and hard drive camcorders. They are also cheaper, but have better quality. Many model include an SD cade slot for taking still shots. Any digital camcorder will be easy to connect with your computer.

I use the Sony Handicam and I like it a lot. As long as you don't mind having to get the little 8mm cassettes for it, it is a great camera.
