Well, yes, if you stopped smoking that would help, but it is not the reason your gums are bleeding...."gingivitis" is. That translates into inflammation or infection of your gums due to plaque and bacteria at your gumlines. When was the last time you had a "cleaning" at the dentist? You should have it done every 3-6 months (especially if you smoke!) What happens eventually with gingivitis is the bacteria at the gumline slowly starts to deterioriate the bone (ever hear of bone loss?) and your teeth will loosen and....eventually fall out. No joke. Get to a dentist NOW and have a cleaning (you might have to go to a Periodontist...a dentist who specializes in gum problems if your gums are really bad)...and then I will guarantee he will recommend flossing, proper brushing of your teeth and professional cleaning every 3-6 months. And yeah, he will probably tell you to STOP smoking, too. Good luck and get to a dentist .....ASAP!

Smoking is bad but it does not cause gum infection. In fact studies have show that smokers will have less bleeding than non smokers. That is because the blood vessels in the gums are constricted and so less bleeding. If you are heavy smoker and your gums bleed , you probably have Periodontitis and simple Gingivitis, which is the infection of gums. If left untreated, you will eventually lose start teeth. You can start by seeing a periodontist (not a dentist) and start with deep cleaning if needed. That will remove any kind of deep calculus deposits on your teeth. Once you have the teeth cleaned, you can maintain that by flossing every day (running your floss between your teeth once or twice will not sonsitute flossing though). Correct flossing technique is that you should folss each surfce 20 times (i.e. 20 downward and upward strokes). Of course brush 2-3 times a day for 2 minutes each time.

Well, you SHOULD stop smoking, and not just for your teeth and gums! But you know this. ; )

Bleeding gums can be a sign of gingivitis, which is gum disease. This can result in your gums receding from your teeth and causing decay and/or terrible sensitivity. You can also LOSE your teeth. So, you need to get yourself to the dentist pronto! In the meantime, brush at least twice a day (properly...no sawing back and forth on the teeth), floss regularly, and start rinsing your mouth thoroughly with straight Listerine. Swish it around your mouth for no less than 2 minutes.

Good luck!

Well, you should visit a dentist to ensure that you don't have gingivitis. If I recall correctly, bleeding from your gums is one sign of gingivitis.

Try brushing your teeth more often and flossing regularly. Also try using a Water Pik helped me.
