I always seem to need to learn whatever languages are available where I am, in the Navy I traveled to the island of Japan where I was off and on for 3 years. (long enough to pick it up)... but, then when I got home about the only place that you could use it (later) was a sushi bar. So I decided to learn Spanish because so many people here speak it.

I'm learning Mandarin.
Because:
1. I love the Chinese culture, I find it very interesting and am particularly interested in Chinese art - (landscape paintings) and Chinese literature -The Journey West (we know it as Monkey or Monkey Magic).
2. During my time at senior school, I often skived French classes and called my German teacher 'Frog-slime' instead of 'Fraulein'. So... I can't speak any other languages and yes I was a horrible little boy.
3. I'm living and working in Taiwan, have been studying Mandarin for almost 2 years and have almost an intermediate grasp of it - which is really great as I can interact with all the locals.
4. Money!!!! I plan to study intensively for the next few years - do an MA in interpretation and become a professional interpreter.
p.s. I wasted my time at university studying 'fine art' - I know have debts to pay and I want to pay them off in style...in just a few more years.

In middle school, we had to pick electives, and they made us order our choices from 1 to 4. I put Spanish as my 4th choice, and somehow got "stuck" with it and had to take the class. After starting Spanish classes, I loved the language!! I couldn't continue it much further in high school, and waited until my last 2 semesters to pick up my language credits as an undergrad in college, so for about 10 years, I was stuck at knowing a very limited vocabulary and only the present tense.
When I started taking it in college, I fell in love with it all over again, and the fast pace of the classes helped out a lot. So, now a year and a half after I started taking it again as an undergrad, I consider myself fairly proficient, and I hope to be fluent some day (preferably some day soon!!)!
Fun question, thanks. :)

I am working on my third language: French. My first is Spanish, second, English.
I picked English because that was the language spoken at my school and French, because of its slight similarity to Spanish. After that, I'll pick Italian and perhaps Portuguese. Same reason.

I picked my third.... my 2nd language is a compulsory subject at school!
I was born in Hong Kong and I went to anglo-chinese schools (from kindegarden), we have all subjects in english except chinese and chinese history.
I learned Japanese in my teen because I wanted to read Japanese comics. Later then, I went to the college in Tokyo.
I learned French and Japanese almost at the same time because Paris was my option for studying design... but I failed the French examination in my second year, so I sticked to Japanese.
French is such a beautiful language that I always want to pick it up again!

I don't pick my second or third language, but I have to learn them. My first language is Cantonese because my grandpa speaks Cantonese. My second language is Vietnamese because my parents speak Viet. My third language is English because I live in the US. I'm studying Spanish and French right now because they are very useful in America

I originally learned French as my second language (English being my first). This was simply the only option available in my primary school and, having started, it made sense to continue into secondary school.
I am now struggling to try to learn German for a more practical reason - my girlfriend is German and her family don't speak much English!

I'm Spanish and my 2nd language is English and I didn't pick it... It is compulsory when at school. French used to be the compulsory one, but in the late 80s they changed it. In high school I picked it but didn't like it, so I changed it to German. Too difficult.

Well, I chose quite a few second languages (lol) because I love being able to communicate with people all over the world, I'm curious about other cultures and my major is, consequently, Translation Studies.
Those are good enough reasons, I would say... ;o)

I'm learing German. Deutsches! Why? Because English is based off of old German and French. If I could learn a third language it'd be French.
