From what I've seen and heard, George Foreman.

It depends on what you call modern times. Rocky Marciano undefeated heavyweight champion had a 49-0-0 43 KO's record and is regarded as the hardest puncher ever capable of knocking you out in any round. He is alleged to have had his punch tested at 2000 lbs per square inch. In more modern times I would have to say that George Foreman and Mike Tyson had the hardest punches. It has been said that getting hit by Foreman is like getting hit with a baseball bat!

48K,

George Foreman is the hardest hitting heavy in the modern era. Take a look at some of his work. The big fella has always administered punishing heavy blows from as far back as the amateurs. If you get a chance, pick up Foreman's greatest hits/ KO's DVD. Ask Joe Frazier, Ali, Ken Norton, Michael Moorer, or anyone in between. Foreman is the original "Punisher". This guy was not always fat, but, he has always been big man. He has always thrown big punches that made boxers want to run, cover up, question themselves, and even reconsider their decision to fight him. George inflicted more punishment on fighters than any fighter that I have ever seen, including Ali, Barrera, Coralles, Duran, Erich (Butterbean) Esch, Frazier, Gatti,Hagler, Ibeabuchi, Julian Jackson, Klitchsko, Liston, Mercer, Norton, Olajide, sam Peter, ike Quartey, razor Ruddock, Stevenson(Teofilio), Tua, Valuev(nickolay), Joe Walcott, X(aka B-Hop), Young and Zaragoza(daniel)

It's a toss up between Mike Tyson and Ernie Shavers. The difference in Tyson was his freakish speed for a heavyweight which made his power even more destructible. However, Shavers has been frequently credited as being the hardest hitter in recent memory.

George Foreman, Mike Tyson hit hard yes, but in a rumble with both men being in their prime, Foreman would knock Tyson out of the ring by the 4th round, if not earlier.

To toughguy, ring magazine says that Joe Louis is the greatest puncher and Rocco is only rated 14th. Modern fighters would be Foreman, Shavers and Tyson.
