When I was in primary school (about 12years ago) a couple of girls tied me to a pole and tried to strangle me with my school tie. Eversince I can't stand to wear things around my neck (not a necklace or even a polo neck shirt). If someone puts their arm around my neck its like I can't breath. How do I get over this.
Opinions Please.

I don't really have money to go seek professional help at the moment. I can barely afford to pay the rent.
I actually met the same girls a few years later in highschool. Hows that for sick and twisted. They were later expelled and one is sitting with 4 kids and she is only 23.

I have tried wearing something like a necklace but I eventually take it off and if I can't get if off quickly I seem to get hysterical.

I do work out. I do Latin American and Ballroom dancing as well as Scuba Diving. Im not really worried about someone attacking me its just that I want to be able to wear the necklace my boyfriend bought me a while a go. Its so pretty. You know that I can't even wear a scarf in winter.

Start by placing a thread around you neck while you're alone (a thread so easily broken that it would snap if anyone even fingered it casually).

Then graduate to going out in public wearing the thread.

Eventually try to imagine that the thread is a solidly-made necklace.

When you get comfortable with that, advance to a real necklace and, I think, your problem will be largely solved.

A course in self-defense might also be a good all-round confidence-builder. It should also confer the benefit of your being able to protect yourself from real dangers, not just the ones you imagine. Such courses are often offered to women free, or at nominal charge, by women's-rights groups, neighborhood associations, and local organizations like the YWCA or YMCA.

I was wondering if your boyfriend knows of your problem. I'm not saying that he did anything wrong by the gift of the necklace, but I couldn't help but wonder if he could be a source of strength for you. Sometimes it is easier for two people to face a problem than it is to go alone.

I think that the biggest step is to acknowledge this fear, and that is truly is a problem with an actual physical effect. Then the next step is to dissociate the psychosomatic response that you have from the fear itself. That won't be easy, and it will likely not be quick, but what needs to occur is the mental separation of how your body reacts from the event itself.

I like the idea from another answer of using something like thread that can be snapped off quickly. I would recommend starting with a very big loop, one that can slide over your whole body, wearing it on your shoulders so it would be around your neck but not feel like it. If you can start with that, you can work to gradually reduce the loop's size over a stretch of time.

These are my opinions only, so don't take them as medical advice, but hopefully there might be something in my answer that will be of benefit. I wish you well.

Hey i suggest you try something like Karate or any other form of self defence.

If thats too expensive you could try working out on your own because that would give you both inner and outer strength, before long survival will nolonger be an issue and things around your neck nolonger a threat.

you have a phobia honey, i would get some professional help, and learn how to face this phobia instead of being scared of it, hypnotherapy is excellent for phobia's as for the girls who did this to you i would like to meet them myself they would never do anything like that again, try the hypnosis it really works darl

You don't have to be that morbid you know... Always be brave... It's not like you're gonna die at your age... Try to get away with them... Read the bible so you'll always feel that someone is always beside you... And that someone is God.
