I am taking a friend's child to the farm. Current law says that if no appropriate child seat available then use an adult seat belt, but surely a booster chair will be better as the seat belt will come across at a better height?

You should use a booster seat.

Never muck about with a child's life - even if you are a good driver there is always the chance some muppet will make mincemeat of your car and its occupants.
A two year old should be in a proper car seat, but if you cannot borrow one from somebody, then a booster seat is the lesser of the two evils.
I would strenuously recommend that you get a proper car seat. And as I understand it (tho stand to be corrected) a child must be 10 to use only adult belt.
Cheap carseats in Argos. Well worth it in case the worst happens.

Are you mad - you need to get a child seat or borrow one at least! It isn't safe for a child to go in an adult belt or a booster seat. For the safety of the child you must ensure that the child is properly strapped in in a legal child seat. Just think of the consequences if you didn't and you had an accident! It wouldn't be worth thinking about ........

Kids under 4' 9" must be in a booster seat. If the kid is actually 2 years old you should consider a convertible seat forward facing. In case none is available go with the booter. You can get them fairly inexpensive at www.kidzthings.com where Britax boosters start at 89.99 with free shipping.

Plus depensing on the state you live kids under certain age and height will not be allowed to ride without a car seat at all. Please visit booster.gov for more information

I hope this helps

A booster chair is safer for a small child. My family has used one for four kids, wearing an adult seat belt can actually hurt a child in an accident.

actually the law has now been changed, and all children must be in a booster seat up to a certain height which equates to an age of about 7.

I would hope that your friend has a suitable restraint that she can lend you if you are taking her child out.

Go to somewhere like the Halfords website to get more information on the law change that happened in May this year.

A booster chair should be used at all times with young children, some booster chairs are designed for use by children up to 11 years old.

Check with your local Sherrif's department. If you were to be pulled over with your child in a restraint that is not meant for his/her age, your could get into trouble. Did you know that you could buy a new child seat or booster seat and drive your vehicle to the Sherrif's department and they will install it? Its free. They are all about safety!

The bottom line is:-
If you crash and the child is injured in any way because of the innappropriate method of securing them in, you will be very badly affected by the law of karma.
Don't ever scrimp on safety for a child EVER.
Buy a proper car seat appropriate to the age of the child.
Put it on your credit card-take it back to the shop after you've finished with it.
