US marines and any other marines in other countries is a cut above the rest because they are the ultimate fighting force in a large scale unlike rangers and special forces that operates only in small units. Marines are disciplined and had the hardest boot camp as compared to other units.

Well there J T you certainly are informed there aren't you. You also talk like a man with a paper asshole. That is if you are a man.

To answer the question the United States Marine Corps is the finest fighting organization in the world. Making comparisons is difficult because each unit you mentioned has a different role. Specifying comparable sizes doesn't help because each would be equipped differently. Each would have their own element in which they would excell. Rangers are good troops. In addition to basic infantry theyve gone through jump school and a rigorous ranger school, but they are still army. To compare the two as comparably equipped and comparably sized units I would go with marines every time. There IS a difference in tactics.... and by tactics I mean more than just how they move across a battlefield. It is the way marines interact with each other and a whole different attitude not just as individuals but as a unit. Special Forces are again a highly trained group of professional soldiers. I have never personally witnessed anything to make me believe they are exceptional as an infantry unit. Having said that, I wouldn't be afraid to be in a tight situation with a beret covering my back. SEALS are the cream of the crop in my opinion. I've never worked with SEALS, in fact I've never seen them train, but from everything I've read and heard their training is the most difficult and physically demanding of all. How much that training translates directly into infantry skills I can't say...but I'd have to guess they'd be hell to go up against. But all this is moot...it's speculation about something that's never going to happen. They are all on the same team thank God. I can tell you this much, as sure as I'm sitting here some ranger will come along and see it a totally different way...and that's the way it should be. All those mentioned have a right to be proud of who and what they are. In fact I really don't like questions like this because I don't want to insult anyone that deserves respect because of my personal opinion. Todays U.S. armed forces have gotten so good and I'm proud of them all.

Ranger...I wish I'd have answered this question the way you did. You have humbled me...humbled us all with your comments. Thank you.

No the Marines are not an elite force, in fact until Februay of 2006 they did not even have a Special Ops Unit,

Could they beat a Special Ops Unit, There are only two American Special Ops Units that are strictcly military WarFighters The Proud A** Kicking US Army Green Beret and the much hyped US Navy SEALS ( Rangers are larval Green Beret),
Consider that Marine ( a Department of the Navy) boot camp is far and away tougher than Navy boot camp so one would wonder why the Elite Forces would be drawn from the Navy? generally because Marines are type "A" gung ho personalities who are "Indoctrinated" to do what they are told when they are told without thought or question as a group, this has earned them great respect but Special Forces need to be educated, motivated willing and capable of acting individually or as a team. This does not suggest Marines are uneducated by any means just that their indoctrination by necessity makes them highly aggresive and more prone to rash acts, (While charging a machine gun nest may sound heroic sound strategy will get the job done with less risk). Dying for your country is is not heroic, let the enemy die for his.
I believe that properly "Trained" Marines would decimate a SEAL team in short order were it not for the fact that SEAL's ALWAYS have air support, artillery, satellite imaging and a fall back rescue positons in place. I would have MUCH MORE respect for SEAL's were they drawn for the Corp. The real mans branch of the Navy.

Ahhhhh the Green Beret, A** Kicking soldiers from day 1, Self reliant, highly educated, completely motivated.
very few high tech gizmo's at their disposal, using whatever weapons that can be procured by the indigent population, Training, residing and fighting alongside the population of the host country, no aircraft carrier or submarine to bail them out when they are "In the sh*t, only guile, cunning and wits. waist deep in mud, hordes of every imaginable biting bug, oppressive heat and this is at base camp this is the US Army Green Beret.
These fine gentlemen don't make movies they are the ultimate warriors no hype no hoopla just as* kicking guts and blood in the mud WarFighters.

No the Marine troop would be decimated, thank God that will never occur.

That depends on what kind of objective you're talking about . Navy SEALS have different training and mission specialists for different Field of operations for example Navy SEALS are the state of the art in night recon ops from the sea Army Rangers are halo jumpers and Marines are the best desert warfare troops I've seen in a long time This might sound a little bit of favoritism here but I'm an officer in the Marine Corps reserves

To rebuke that the Marines do not have a "special forces" group, as such, you are forgetting Marine Force Recon. To you who say that we did not get such a unit until Feb 2006, that is just when Force Recon became part of the Special Operations Command, the history of my Force Recon begins as such.

The Marine Corps Force Recon got its start during WWII in the South Pacific as the Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion. In 1957 the Marine Corps merged the amphibious reconnaissance company with an experimental recon team to form the 1st Force Reconnaissance Company.

Force Recon saw their first military action in Viet Nam, but they were deactivated not long after the end of the conlict. It wasn't until 1986 that the 1st Force Reconnaissance was reactivated and later deployed in the Gulf War.

Today the Marine Corps has four Force Reconnaissance units, which serve as the far-reaching eyes and ears of the Corps' top battlefield commanders.

A NEW CHAPTER IN MARINE HISTORY

In February 2006 the Marine Special Operation Command was activated, making Force Recon Marines an official part of the U.S. Special Operations Command team along with the other special operations units — SEALS, Rangers, Special Forces and Special Tactics teams. Even though MARSOC won't be fully constituted until 2010, you can bet that Force Recon will continue to be in the fight.

The Marines are not considers an Elite force. Elite forces are considered those who attend additonal training for superior to other military memebers. Seals, Deltas, Pararescue, (sometimes marine force recon is called SPEC OPS but I disagree).

In a groud war Deltas or Seals versus Marines (assuming you have a 1 on 1 approach) would win. They have more technology and the training to succeed. Marines have airplanes to bomb them, but these Spec War people also have fast boats, helicopters and airplanes, so you cant argue that.

If you are talking planes, the its sillyness. I hillbilly pilot with 1 day of experience could kill a platoon of Seals or Deltas by dropping a bomb. No matter how good you are you cannot stop or survive a bobm landing directly on you.

One on one marines could not do that. If they could, then the government would stop selecting Rangers to become Deltas and then sending them to expensive training. They would stop the Seal program (costing about 5 million dollars to train each Seal) because they could just create lots of Marines for about 30,000 dollar each. Money is a factor of war, cheap isnt always better.

Marines are by no means "elite". I have the utmost respect for them and what they do but they are not elite. Every single person who signs on the line becomes a marine. They do not make cuts or have performance drops. You can not compare an infantry Marine to any special forces group in the U.S. Training for SEALs has a 85% failure rate... while Marines have a 100% graduation rate. And hundreds of Marines have gone to BUD/s and failed, and others have made it.

In comparison to many other countries, Marines are elite. However, there is no way they can be compared to our special forces... which is why we have Marine Force Recon

U.S. Marines are elite in that they (for the most part) can attack from the sea. I'm always quick to point out that the biggest amphibious operation of all time was done without the U.S. Marines (i.e. Normandy), who were busy in the Pacific.

You take a random hundred Marines, and throw them against fifty random Rangers, the Marines will lose.

I have to agree with twackman

You are comparing a whole branch to the elite elements to the other branches.

Yes the Marines are good at what they do but I wouldnt say all of them fall into the elite categories. You got to remember the Marines are comprized of a whole lot of people.

It depends on whether the Marines have a photographer available. Marines refuse to do anything except whine if they aren't having their pictures taken.

Marines are what the real military sends in to force the opponent to use up his ammunition. They have no real value.
