IGNORANCE. They think pit bulls are some kind of monster, because of the media hype about they sub-humans who fight them and the children who have been mauled by a bad dog allowed to run loose. The same thing happened with Dobermans in the 1960's. The whole breed is condemned for the actions of a few bad owners with bad dogs.
Do everything you can to educate the public or it may be YOUR breed that they're trying to ban next! Discrimination and banning breeds is not the answer. Ask your local lawmakers to pass laws to prosecute the owners of any dog that is allowed to run loose. If someone has a vicious dog and it bites someone, that owner should be punished the same way as if he left a loaded gun lying around and a child shot himself with it - make it a major felony!
Physically, any large dog and many small ones are capable of killing a child. Even a Golden retriever accidentally killed a child this past winter - the child was sent out to play wearing a scarf. Tragically, the dog thought this was for him to play tug-of-war with and the poor child died of strangulation.

Pit bulls are naturally strong animals. VERY IGNORANT PEOPLE WHO SHOULD LOSE EACH BODY PART INDIVIDUALLY will take these animals and train them to fight each other. They actually fight to the death. Other ignorant people will actually attend these "shows" and watch them battle it out to the end. Sometimes the runt will be the practice dog. She or he will be the one that the other stronger pits will hurt. These pits are only aggressive because of the way they were raised. Also, pit bulls have strong barks. Mine does and people run. She's never bitten anyone and never attacked. She just...barks. All dogs bark, some just aren't as strong. My sister's lab is 20 lbs heavier than my pit and her bark is just a ferocious.

They are ignorant and gullible people who believe in stereotyping, they hear from a friend of a friend that pitty breeds are evil and bred to attack people etc etc and they believe it as fact without establishing the veracity of the claim. This attitude can be traced back to schools which seem to teach people not to question what they hear ie "teacher said it, must be true" and can be compared to a flock of sheep who, mindless because they believe whatever reaction another sheep has, often run right off a cliff in the hundreds because one sheep got spooked. This is why they put Goats in with the sheep, goats are sturdy, full of common sense and dont take every "rustle in the woods" seriously until they have verified the occurence as truly something to be worried about. In effect the goats are the common sense and skepticism...they are the voice of reason, that save the sheep from wasting needless energy or dying all because a branch fell off of a tree. I have come to really believe this is the case with most irrational prejudices in humans and I like to call it "Sheepism".... Also I take my role as the proverbial "goat" very seriously and I try to educate as of the pitbull hater "sheep" as possible with plain common sense, experience and knowledge......you should try to do the same, maybe then there will be less "sheep" running off the edge of the cliff because one sheep said Run!

because they only see the people who are bad raising those animals. I am a firm believer of the animal will act the way its trained or brought up. I have had quite some many breeds in my day. I have raised Dobermans to Dalmations to even resqued Greyhounds. It's all how they are raised. My best friend has a pitbull and he is the sweetest dog ever! He loves to play and catch the ball and the funny this is he sleeps in the bed with her! Boy does he love Belly and butt scratches!!! One thing though they are very territorial animals when it comes to the hand that feeds them... Better hope someone never trys to mess with the owner or he's chopped liver....

cause its like the few bad apples..
a few people bred raised pit bulls to be vicous.. and fight and stuff.. and then perhaps some of those dogs.. were rescued and then they were adopted afterwards and bit people..
i'm not sure exactly.. but what it boils down too
is a few bad dogs.. gave them a bad name
when people need to stop and think that not everyone of them is going to bad .. i

bad press. a few jerks train pitts to fight and that's all anyone hears about. or some other jerk trains his pitt bull to "protect" or "guard" and it bites a kid. i understand that's a problem, but it doesn't mean the entire breed should be destroyed. be responsible owners, people!
