Without more info hard to give you an exact reason but here are a few major reasons 1.) he may be insecure about himself so he acts tough and possessive is a trait guys deem as tough 2.) girlfriend may be hot he's insecure so afraid of losing her 3.) might not trust her 4. maybe he doesnt know any better.

Coz he loves his girlfriend. And that`s a kind of instict wanna protect our girlfriend from anythin` which could harm her.
For the girl must be safe also, and could feel that the guy really care. That`s good as long as still in common. But if possessive in negative way, too much without considering our girlfriend privat-life...make our girlfriend loosing her freedom or could act as the way she is ..that`s wrong.
He couldn`t do that, must realized our girlfriend is a human being not as a souvenir that we could keep in a box of glasses without considering her life.

its a male mentailty! if if females do they same they get irritated. i thnk possessiveness weakens a relationship cos it means one doesnt trust his partner. or i'll just put it in a way my ex (possessive-ex) put it in...he used to say.. he trusts me.. but he doesnt trust the people around me. whatever that was suppose to mean. anyways, i think its all wrong.
