All plants respond to tropisms, tropisms are sensed by phytohormones that respond to a variety of stimuli. The stimuli may be things such as gravity, light, touch, or photoperiod.

The answer to your question is that trees grow in two directions in response to gravity. The gravitropism is sensed and the levels of phytohormone concentration determines whether or not the stem grows and in what direction.

Phototropism is not responsible for a plant growing upward it is what causes a plant to grow toward light, regardless of the direction. In trees it causes the leaves to move the upper surface to face the light.

The roots have a positive reaction to the gravitropism that causes them to grow downward.

This is a very very simplified explaination of gravitropism. If you are interested in more information run searches on google and yahoo.

They need sunlight for photosynthesis to take effect. As the tree grows, they fight against the other trees nearby in order to get the most sunlight by growing as tall as possible.

They "sense" certain factors in the environment to determine how to grow and "turn" as a result. Geotropism and phototropism are the primary methods.

These tropisms are not isolated to trees or even to plants ... many fungi also exhibit geotropism. There are many other tropisms as well ... hydro, chemical, touch (you can see this in plants such as a Venus flytrap), etc.

Actually plants have hormones to go up and down.

Shoots grow away from gravity and toward light.

Roots grow toward gravity and toward water.

It's in the action of hormones (auxin) and the plant's cells.
