Its supposed to be the time of year when the Gates of Hell are opened and all displaced spirits are allowed to wander in our world.

These spirits are supposedly in deprivation and hungry so the Chinese make food offerings and Hell money in order to make peace with these spirits during this time.

Taking matters more eloborately, some will organise variety shows and operas to entertain these spirits also. This is a grand month for the Chinese, not in celebration but more into appeasement and having good fortune bestowed upon them by the spirits in return.

The Buddhists believe in the 7th month festival too, but their offerings will be more benevolent in the form of continual prayers to aid these spirits in the path to reincarnation.
