I know during WWII most of the guys didn't get out until after the war. And there were some that had the four year plus six month enlistment.
The Roman Legions were in the service for 20 years.

I was in a relationship with a submariner. His deployment was about 6 months long with very limited contact there would be months without a phone call, or email. Also he was not allowed to discuss where he was at all.

our mia's in korea and vietnam. the prisoners from korea that are missing are probably dead by now, but they won't tell us. be hard to live this long in those conditions. there are prisoners in vietnam that still need to be brought home. it's been a while for all of them.
