The longer war between Pakistan and India can be avoided, the less likely Kashmir, Saichen Glacier and other points of contention will be an issue.
Now that both countries have nuclear weapons, their relationship has "matured" to that of the USA/USSR during the Cold War. Ironically, this is a good thing.
Living under the threat of Mutually Assured Destruction, real peace prospects are now likely. Neither country is going to invade the other, although militant agitators on both sides will constantly contest the peace.
Democracy or no, the leadership of both countries are pragmatic enough to compromise enough to live peacefully.
Don't expect the borders between India and Pakistan to ever change again.

Pakistan is whatever one may say still more of a dictatorship than a democracy and is indirectly controlled more by the army than the government. It has so many terrorist camps inside it yet no one crackdowns on the camps even when every month thare's a bomb blast in some important city of the world. Pakistan can no way in hell help Kashmir all its done is make the situation worse in Kashmir. India can help the situation there, but India is too soft. It does not do enough for its civilians. Pakistan does nothing to the terrorists in their own country. My view is that the situation there cannot be resolved without a dual partnership between India and Pakistan and that is not happening anytime within this decade. Outside pressure and intervention is required and USA needs to stop its bon homie with Pakistan and the same applies to China also. Pakistan will most probably end up to be a failed state within the next 15 years if measures are not taken internally to curb things like honour killings & radicalism. Kashmir is being ravaged internally by terrorists, though however the situation is better in the Indian side than in the Pakistani side and both the governments are no way in hell doing enough.

Pakistan and India have been in sort of like a cold war stage since 1947 (when Pakistan declared it self independent) but the thing is that Pakistan has less resources and India has way too many people to distribute its resources....both countries are poor and developing countries.....since we know that Kashmirs want to be independent and want Kashmir to be another country personally i think that UN should just declare Kashmir independent....the reason USA wont interfear with this is because neither Pakistan, nor India and Kashmir have any oil so no benefit here...
