How is that arrogant? It's merely acknowledging the truth (or, to me, the obvious) - the most important thing in your life is you. That's the whole point behind self-awareness. You are your own self; you exist for you.

Even if there are other things in the universe that wield more power than humans, or exist in far greater numbers, that's irrelevent - we are still the first priority in our own lives, regardless of whatever else exists.

Otherwise, what would be the point of living? Not having the highest priority in your own life is tantamount to being enslaved by someone/something else.

It is one of the signs of a society caught up in excess- where someone's dog has more food and health care, even psychiatric care, than some human beings.

It could also be a sign of the end. It says in II Timothy 3:1-4:

"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—

Peace to ya'll down south. We love you.

Consider that humans have self-derived power. Although our capacities were defined through forces external to us, their employment only resulted from our self-actuation. That is, we rule the planet not because it was given to us, but because we rose up, we fought for it. Many men died in exploration, in conquests, and in their struggle to subdue nature.

That said, is it arrogant for the marathon champion to think that he is the best runner?

Lastly, I have tried to base my argument without reference to God, and I think I was successful, at least in the one paragraph sense, but I would just like to add one thing. If you accept that there is a creator, then you have to recognize that nothing else has been created with such a divine aspect, that is with those characteristics that are similar to the divine: the capacity to create, intelligence, rationality, the potential for harmony, language, the arts, etc.

So do you agree that God would be OK with humans considering themselves as most important if he created us most in his image?

u r very much right provided u really understand the meaning of this phrase,u r most important in the eyes of god, provided u discover HIM within u,since nobody can enter inside u,only u r capable of exploring urself, none else can help u in this mission.

Yes, it is very ignorant. I hate it when people say that humans are not animals. We ARE! That's why I love love love the phrase"non-human animals". By the way, I don't think you phrased that strangely at all.

Not at all!!

"Importance" is entirely a matter of opinion. Who's to say bread is any more important than cheese?

I think the real question is: does it really matter who or what is more important?

Psychologists say that when we are infants, we are the center of our universe, we think everything revolves around us. Let's just say it's immature.
